Things to do in Shirakawa-mura
A very humble restaurant in the heart of Shirakawa-go. It serves soba set for lunches. The taste is excellent and there is a limited seating capacity. Travelers should look into the japanese sign and refer to the map of shirakawa go. In the map Yamamotoya refers as selling desserts/sweets. The resto located behind the crowded Nomura restaurant , so travellers have more than one option there.

We stumbled upon this restaurant because most restaurants were closed on Mondays. We tried to look for Hida beef restaurant, but with no luck so we ended up with soba. The food was Ok and filled your stomach but not anything spectacular. Space was limited, so wrote your name on the outside board before you enter.

So we happened upon this place because the kids got cold and hungry and just walked by itGlad we did. The specialty is soba (buckwheat noodles) and the portions were generous and the taste wasn't too bad. Each plate was about $10 US. The seating is one large counter top that holds about sixteen people. They have other items as well but seemed most everyone was ordering the soba

There are not a lot of places to eat in Shirakawago, but we found this little gem outside of the main tourist area about a 10 minute walk up Highway 360. Itâs a small family run restaurant and when we arrived at 2pm for a late lunch, we were the only ones there. The proprietor was an old lady who didnât speak any English but had a very welcoming attitude. She was able to point out items on their picture menu. I ordered the Hida beef and soba noodle set and my wife ordered the Hida beef skewer on rice. Our food arrived promptly and our server lit a small burner and gave me instructions on how to cook my beef. It comes raw with mushrooms, green onion and tofu in a miso paste on top of a magnolia leaf. Stir as it begins to sizzle and it doesnât take long before you can enjoy it with rice. The food is very good and the prices are very reasonable. We left quite happy about our experience. If youâre looking for a great place to eat while visiting Shirakawago, take 10 minutes to walk up to Oyasumidokoro Hiirage for a nice meal.

I went there for lunch and there was nothing to shout about. I do however like the way they placed the beef on a leaf to cook it, I like the smoked smell. The beef portion is small, just 3 or 4 small pieces to go with the rice.

There are food stops everywhere and, while obviously appealing mainly to visitors, seem to favour the local Hida beef burger which is served inside a sort of steamed bun affair. A little dry perhaps, but helped down with some nice cold local beer!

You have to know some Japanese to get your order correctly. No English menu. One person did speak English but the restaurant was too busy to help us. Instead of hot noodles, we got cold soba noodles which surprisingly was tasty. Later in the evening I got an upset stomach and passed out whatever was bothering me. I didn't eat anything else for lunch. So most likely someone or some utensil was not clean. Not going back.

This is a small, boutique, high-grade local (Hida) beef restaurant just 2km down the road from the world famous architectural heritage sight of GasshÅ-zukuri, the traditionally thatched Japanese houses visited by so many of us.This is easily the best restaurant for miles around so if you are combining a visit to the GasshÅ-zukuri with a bite to eat, this is your best bet. Probably for lunch. There are four counter seats and three 4X seat tables in the window annex. The kitchen staff are surprisingly young but skilled at what they serve. It's a limited menu with (I think) only 5 or 6 course options. Including two Hida beef set course lunches.Very reasonably priced. Fresh. And attractively served. The beef was delicious. So why only a 3/5 rating? With the heat from the kitchen and four or five grill ranges pumping out flames the eating area was uncomfortably hot for me. So much so, I stood up and opened a window to cool the place down. I was gently glowing as we sat and ate.Even more annoying was an overhead sound system blaring out J-Pop at an unacceptably high volume. I accept there is a young crowd in the kitchen and I am a boring old man so I did not complain but it annoyed the hell out of me.Were it not for the overly hot room and the too loud music, this place would have been an easy 4/5. I reflect these comments in the poor rating under "Service" although there was absolutely nothing wrong with the server who looked after our table.

Only limited seats in front of the hearth. Was given comfortable seats at the tatami area. Serves delicious meals featuring wild seasonal vegetables and tofu. Would recommend the Hida beef bowl, and sansai soba. Has an English menu so it was pretty convenient.

We stopped here without seeing any recommendations and stumbled across the perfect spot for a cup of tea, a rest and wonderful hospitality.Within seconds of climbing down the stairs we were seated around a traditional fireplace, offered English menus, and books showing magnificent pictures of Shirakawa-go while we wait for our tea.The pride and love for the town and their cafe was evident on the couple looking after us and in retrospect, we made a mistake not returning here for lunch.
