Slip into Nostalgic Time and Place with a Glass of Sake This "izakaya" (Japanese bar) opened in 1961, and has been cherished by the locals ever since. Every night, it is a full of lively conversation with its owner, Toshie-san. Japanese bar favorites such
Kumura from the outside is almost unrecognisible as an izakaya, just the noren hanging over the door giving it away. But once inside it's your classic old style izakaya, like something out of a time warp from the 1960's. My wife and I have been three times and it's been full of locals on every occasion. The food and drink are good without being outstanding but where Kumura excels is its atmosphere and friendly people. Gaijin don't often come here and each time people have been keen to talk to me (in both English and Japanese). If you want the true izakaya experience Kumura is the place.

It is too expensive for the amount of food given to customers. I had a piece of bread with a very small amount of bacon on it and it was more expensive than it should be.

Traditional Sakata Ramen and "Prawn Wonton Noodle" Kachofugetsu serves Sakata ramen based on a faithfully-guarded tradition over 90 years. The prawn wonton noodle, which is their signature dish, will delight you with the flavor of fish-based soup combined
I tried their spring special, which I believe was shio flavor, and it was excellent. My husband tried their shoyu based one and loved it. It's a small restaurant in residential neighborhood. There is a small parking lot across the street. People working there were very kind. We would go back if we are in town again.

Sakata may have little to offer as a destination, but Koise makes up for all of that. This absolutely superb sushi shop is run by a master and crew who know exactly what to do with each fresh ingredient. The 3,500 yen Omakase nigiri course is a delight. Every single piece is from the freshest fish available in the port city, at a reasonable price. The master is a friendly fellow who is used to visitors from around the world. You will not regret yielding the choices to him in the Omakase course, having a tokkuri of sake, and enjoying the warm atmosphere.
