Much better hibachi. The restaurant is located in downtown Ridgewood so parking is something of a challenge during busy periods, which includes almost every lunch and dinner times. There are some very top restaurants in Ridgewood and unless you have a yen for hibachi, I would choose another place.A couple of times when I've tried the sushi here, it was the little off and not as fresh as I would've liked.
This is a well maintained Japanese grocery store. They offer hundreds of products from Japan from tea to rice to vegetables to tiny dried fish to ice cream. They also have a large section of Japanese DVDs, the bulk being anime I presume. The reason I am writing a review on TripAdvisor as a restaurant is due to the fact they have a sushi chef on hand at all times in the back of the store who prepares sushi and sashimi to order. As a vegetarian my options are limited but what I have tried at J mart has been by far the freshest tasting and most delicious sushi I have ever tried! My family are all omnivores and they agreed that the sushi/sashimi at J mart is better quality and tasting than at Sakura in Wyckoff, NJ or at Golden Dynasty in Franklin Lakes, NJ. The prices are very reasonable and the final product is a work of art. A tell tale sign, to me, that this place knows good food and sushi in particular is that the wasabi the serve is real, not "Western wasabi" which is horseradish, mustard, starch and green food coloring and the ginger served with the sushi was not artificially dyed, which some places do at an attempt to make the ginger appear to be fresher/younger.I would give this place 5 out of 5 stars but since they only offer sushi I'm not sure if a 5 star rating is justifiable, then again if I'm rating them solely on their food it deserves 5 stars. Hmmm...Oh yeah, another WONDERFUL thing about this place is that they have fresh veggies including shishito peppers and Japanese cucumbers!! My favorite noodle shop in NYC, Ippudo, has two appetizers I LOVE, one being the fried shishito peppers with lemon juice and a side of yuzu salt and the other is a Japanese cucumber sliced with a sesame seeds and a soy dressing. Thanks to J mart I can purchase these hard-to-find Japanese vegetables and re-create these two appetizers at home! The only other place I have ever seen them for sale was at the Sunrise Mart in NYC.Please note: There are no tables, wait staff, or anything like that. You order sushi and take it home to eat. It's a grocery store with a sushi chef and fresh ingredients.

Busy place but we were seated immediately. Menu is comprehensive but a little confusing. Service was great, very prompt, food brought to table one dish at a time which makes it difficult for the eaters to decide whether to wait and eat together or start when the dish arrives. Hosts are very quick to take away dishes and turn the tables around. Did feel a little pressurised to finish up quickly. Food was very tasty and filling but my dish (red Thai curry) was advertised as hot and spicy, at best it was medium spicy. Will give this place a second chance in the future.

Popular place. Needed reservation. They seem to wait only for ten minutes if you are late. There was a queue of waiting diners when we got there. If going for first time, ask waiter to explain the process. It all-you-can-eat place and experienced customers have their own effective strategies to tackle the large variety of appetisers and sushis. A penalty is charged for wastage. Green tea, ginger and red bean ice creams - all good for dessert. You can BYOB. Needed to take a long walk after the meal.
We came will another couple and were seated promptly. Overall, we had a very nice experience with fast and attentive service. We ordered wings with spicy soy garlic sauce and pork buns to start. Both appetizers had a little kick to them. Both were pretty tasty though. We also ordered a ramen with pork, and egg. The ramen was also very tasty, but it was a little salty. Overall, we had a nice experience here.

They have some unique rolls which I enjoy. The service is attentive. I've brought many friends here who also enjoy the food. The fish appears fresh. No odor. The bento boxes are a decent size. My friend brings home the salad dressing for her children. It's a BYO. Parking stinks so bring quarters. Sun-Thurs they have a special 20% off if you pay cash. Decor is nice and comfortable.

I've been to Wasabi a few times. Two weeks ago I stopped in on a Tuesday evening. I ordered the gyoza (dumplings) and the Wasabi roll - "Yellowtail, fluke and avocado over jalapeno white tuna roll with wasabi mayo".The gyoza was hot and delicious. The Wasabi roll melted in my mouth. The flavors were so delicate and blended perfectly. My green tea was refilled more than once, service was so polite and not pushy. I left feeling so relaxed and happy. My only criticism would be that the lighting is very intense and reflects off the table. Regarding questions below on "family-friendliness" I would say families with kids who can sit still.

We were all very happy with our meals. The place was packed on a Friday nite with people waiting outside around 8 pm.The menu is too big but itâs fun to check out the choices.Amazingly the sashimi was really good! I was a little concerned given the inexpensive pricing for everything.Great soup and salad starters and excellent rolls!Weâve added this to our list.

After reading an article about Shumi in NJ Monthly in the morning, we made a reservation for dinner that same night. We sat at the sushi counter in excited anticipation for our first omskase experience. We opted for the special omakase for $110 per person, and it was well worth it. Also, it's BYO, which is always a plus. Each course was culinary perfection and explained to us in detail by the chef. Plus, it was a beautiful balance of temperatures, textures, and flavors. There is something very freeing about putting decisions in the hands of the chef and being open to trying new items as well as the inventive spin traditional favorites. At the end of our evening, the owner and executive chef, David Seo, spoke to us at length and offered a few extra special bites to complete the experience. He is so warm and humble, even though he is a sushi master. Shumi is a very special restaurant and a place you will not forget. We drove 50 minutes for dinner, but if it was farther, we would still travel for it. It's that remarkable!

Let's start from the beginning,This place was suggested to us by a friend as a pretty decent sushi place in Ridgewood. I have to agree with him on this but then again I had expected a little better in terms of quality of the food. But first things first. Came here on Tuesday night for dinner. The place was packed, so the level of expectation became sky high even though the place is right next to the train station. So we sat down expecting great food and great service. Gotta mention that service was actually great, fast, polite, no nonsense. But food seemed somewhat mediocre considering the number of people that are passing through the place given a full house on a Tuesday night. Me and my wife both ordered Sashimi B (16 pcs) of Sashimi with no white tuna but it seems that Tuna is the fish of choice, where as I would have expected more variety like Mackerel instead of Albacore. And the fish seemed to have that "frozen aftertaste" though it wasn't as prominent as some of the other places I had a chance to visit.Overall I would say this is a good place to visit and I think after the renovations that they were closing for it may be better but it still needs a little bit of improvement.
