Things to do in Oma-machi
Thereâs some effort to get to Oma, so once you are there, making the most of it should include a visit to the Onsen up on the hill. The restaurant in the same building has some good food, too. There is no menu per se, there is a vending machine with the food and drink choices on the different buttons. You put in your money, and punch the buttons, and you get tickets for your food and drink and whatever change is left over.Oma is famous for its tuna, and rightly so. Oma also has a ranch for Wagyu beef, and to draw attention to the quality of their beef, they call it âLand Tuna.â This restaurant was supposed to have had a combo dinner of Oma Beef and Tuna, but that is only for some occasions, as it turned out. I had had a fair amount of Oma Tuna already, so I went for the Nabe pot of âLand Tuna.âIt was brought out in a ceramic pot with a Sterno- like flame underneath the nabe pot; it got cooking fairly quickly. It was delicious, with good veggies mixed in.The service was good, and the 1liter beer was served in an ice- cold mug, which kept it cold the whole meal. The atmosphere was nothing special, but it was nice enough.

Oma is the most famous place in Japan for tuna. It is line- caught, single- hook fishing and the cold waters of the Tsuruga Straits yield the fattiest tuna on earth. Oma no Maguro, as itâs known, fetches huge prices in Tokyo restaurants. But itâs a better deal in Oma.I tried Hamazushi, which seems to have the highest reputation for being picky about taking the best of the best. Whatever they are doing, itâs working. I tried the tuna rice bowl, and it was a world apart from the best I have had to date. Definitely the best tuna I have ever had. There were three cuts: regular maguro, chu toro and o toro. Soooo good. There were only locals there the night I went in, the last day of Golden Week, and the counter had only one other patron, though most of the tables were full. The atmosphere was pretty much like any other sushi bar in a small Japanese town.A must- dine- at restaurant of you are anywhere near Oma.

I specifically flew 17hrs flying/taxi/ferry non-stop from Melbourne, Australia (MEL-SYD-HND-HKD-OMA) to Oma - 'Ground Zero' for Japan's and the Worlds best and most prized Blue Finned Tuna - called 'Hon Maguro' æ¬ãã°ã. (In Jan. 2019 one single Oma tuna sold for USD$3.3million!) Omanzoku was the first tuna restaurant I targeted in this quiet, sleepy town of Oma that sees no foreign tourists and very few Japanese tourists. Founded and run by the legendary retired Oma tuna fisherman Mr Takeuchi and his family Omanzoku is like a shrine to the Hon-Maguro and fishermen of Oma. I came 3 times to this place to eat Hon- Maguro. Unfortunately June is not tuna season in Oma which runs from Sept~Feb so the tuna was not 'nama' ç (fresh from the boat) so I had the next best Oma tuna. Over several days I ordered various maguro sashimi and sushi sets and at one meal I was served by the shy Mr Takeuchi himself! Also had abalone (whole) sashimi and uni. If you like the best tuna I highly recommend this place. Note: This restaurant and others in Oma will close early if few customers.
