What a fantastic find in a deserted side street next to the river in Misasa Onsen. The owner chef Hiro, introduced himself when I told him my wife and I were from Singapore. He had been around the world working in various hotels and restaurants but had felt very pressurised when he had to take charge of 150 kitchen staff. He decided to retire in Misasa Onsen after he went there to enjoy the hot springs. He then went on to recommend a wild pig dish cooked with spices from Dubai. The wild pig had been shot by a local hunter. For my wife he recommended a rice set cooked with white bait fish which he had caught himself. These are as large as anchovies. He further surprised me with a small dish of shredded wild pig which had been stewed for 4 hours to go with the very good saki that he had also recommended. The mains came with various small side dishes with herbs and vegetable which he had planted. After the satisfying meal and conversation, the bill came to only 5000+ Yen! Would had gone back for his extensive set meals if only we had discovered his eatery early.

Where to eat Japanese food in Nanbu-cho: The Best Restaurants and Bars
4 based on 33 reviews
This restaurant is housed in an historical building that was originally a mochi (pounded rice cake) factory. Apparently it still produces mochi, but now it is predominately a restaurant serving "mochi shabu-shabu". Shabu shabu is traditionally a dish prepared at the table by swishing thin slices of beef through a boiling broth. That option is also available, but more interesting is the thin slices of 12 kinds of flavored mochi that you swish through the boiling broth. (Don't leave it in too long or it will melt!)You can also buy the same thin slices of flavored mochi to take home. They also make kimchi on site.In summary, fascinating and somewhat unique cuisine to be consumed in fascinating, historical surroundings.

Only a few restaurants are open at night here in Misasa. Kiraku is one of your choice. This restaurant provides fresh fish, sushi and local sake. Very popular restaurant, so better book in advance in the weekend.
After an amazing hike in Mitokusan mountain we were very excited to have lunch at Tanigawatengudo, as we've heard about their local vegetable based cuisine. It was no disappointment!!! Our host was fantastic, even through language barriers, she did her best to help us and explaining in detail the ingredients she uses (she even brought a book out)! The food was a feast. We had the udon with tempura and 'dry' tempura. The pickles and fresh wasabi were my favorites. Apparently all the ingredients are from their garden or the mountain. I fully recommend this little restaurant! A highlight of our day!
