At Musoan we were given not just a private room, but actually two private rooms. We ate in a room with a low table and a sunken area for the legs. Adjoining this room, and still part of our private space, was a sitting room. Both rooms were decorated in a blend of Japanese and Victorian styles. While we could hear faint sounds from other diners, for the most part we felt as if we were the only ones in the restaurant. The food was excellent. Memorable dishes included both baby and full-grown abalone, kelp tips sprinkled with real gold flecks, a "Nara potato" consisting of a ball of mashed potato surrounding a core of uni, and cooked tilefish and pomfret.Interestingly, Musoan produces its own wine, a red, from locally grown grapes. We had a bottle, and it was quite tasty, like a Pinot Noir.Three servers, all women dressed in gorgeous kimonos, attended to our every need. While only one spoke any English, the language gap was no problem. We were surprised by the fact Musoan is not located on a commercial street, but rather in a residential neighborhood filled with suburban-style houses. The restaurant is not fully accessible by car or taxi; you have to walk about 100 feet from the nearest street. You first pass through a pleasant garden, then enter a traditional-style Japanese house. The one drawback to Musoan is that itâs very expensive. In fact, it was the most expensive restaurant we patronized on our recent trip to Japan. Thus, while our evening at Musoan was highly pleasurable, we wouldnât consider the restaurant a great value. It seemed we were paying a premium for a private room in a beautiful restaurant.
