Iwanai is a strange Industrial fishing port town with a good few restaurants clustered in what is sort of the town centre. The restaurants aren't all the obvious so you have to look. We saw the flag and a picture menu in the window so ventured in. It's a very dated little family joint hooked up with a small hotel. It's very 'Mum n Dad' and dated decor wise. They had ok dating with tables and a few Tatami floor settings. The meals were fine and they did nice Kids Sets which were done well as was my lunch set of Sushi and cold Soba and our 4th meal was hot Soba with tempura. Prices are average and service sufficient. It looks fine frequented by locals so safe bet, though not the Ritz.

The town of Iwanai is a small place, but there are unusually many seafood and sushi restaurants in the central area of the town. We weren't sure why this town could support this many restaurants, but later we learned that the area has Hokkaido's one and only N-power station with a large number of people working there.âTaramaru" is a mascot character of the town of Iwanai and the Taramaru Market is an open space for venders to open their shops on a temporary basis. But this restaurant called "Kaisen-ya" or fresh seafood shop has a semi permanent setting for both restaurant and seafood shop.We were recommended by a staff person at the nearby "Michi-no-eki Iwanai" information centre that this small restaurant is just as good as any other restaurants in town but cost about 10% or so less.My wife had the squid sashimi lunch and I had the grilled "hokke" fish lunch and both of us were very happy.

Visited this little sushi restaurant with some friends. We were looking for an authentic Japanese place to have dinner and tried to avoid the touristy places you can find in Niseko. The chef and his wife didnât speak English, but communicating with them was no problem. Great place with a good atmosphere and good food. Very friendly and service minded staff. The sushi is prepared right in front of you by the experienced chef. He was very flexible and adjusted the menus for each of us.

This place rocks! Special mention goes to the salmon jaw (benizake no kama) and the bream (tsubo dai). But my favorite is the salmon belly (sa-mon harasu).Very reasonable prices and good quality, healthy meals.

Iwanai is arguably one of the best places in the world to get sushi, it couldn't be fresher. There's a few restaurants to choose from but this is an amazing spot. Go for the 1750 yen sushi set for safer options, or splash out on the 2100 yen (or upwards) for rarer/weirder items.
