Check on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_sushi#Funazushi). It is a unusual dish even in Japan, so, if you are on this area, you should at least try. Do not smell, just eat it. It was not that bad as I thought. The restaurant is very simple, but the service is ok and there are very good appetizers.

Let me put upfront that I'm not much for seafood in general and especially not raw seafood in particular. But when in Rome and all that..so we (me and my fellow travelers) braved to (to us) unreadable menu and entered this restaurant. And it turned out to be one of the best food experiences of our trip.Despite the obvious language barrier somebody was found quickly who spoke some English. having checked some of our likes and dislikes with food he then put together a menu for us that was brought to our private dining booth in stages. Even though there was (among other things) sashimi, every bit was delicious and most was eaten. Considering some of the expensive fish we were served we were worried about the bill, but even that turned out to be very mild. Recommended!

午餐時段到訪的千成亭,供應不少近江牛的套餐,可選擇牛丼、燒肉丼或蒸牛肉丼。選擇的一千六百日圓大燒肉丼近江牛份量不少、燒肉入口已半融化、十分味美化算。

Phone +81 749-22-6728 Serves local Omi Beef. Japanese restaurant name is 近江牛と近江鶏の店 近江や Street name is Yume Kyobashi Castle Road
Located on the atmospheric Yume-Kyobashi Castle Road nearly two blocks from the castle outer moat and on the left side this cute old-style restaurant was a welcome stop when the rain came down after we visited the castle. We had the set menu at Y2700 so it was a bit expensive but really delicious. We had Omi beef slices with salad, pickles, rice and miso and totally forgot about the rain.Nice staff and pleasant service.

Saw this advertised as specialality Hinai chicken restaurant with 'oyakodon' (chicken/egg/rice bowl). Spacious interior with traditional dark wood & seating. We opted to try the oyakodon & chicken skewers - all came with lovely presentation BUT taste just didnt match. Was sadly disappointed by the oyakodon - hardly any chicken & not the taste. Skewers were small & rather salty, again the taste didnt match the hype. Was also very expensive for what we ate.

I wanted to try the local Ohmi beef so I booked into this restaurant. The room was nicely furnished. I selected a fixed menu including a number of beef courses with different methods of preparation. The dishes on which the meal was served were excellent and the food seasonal and fresh. I had beef sushi (a first for me) tataki style, boiled and grilled steak. They were all tasty and the steak delicious. There were interesting courses with it. I drank a Hikone sake. At the end I was satisfied that I'd had a good sample of local specialties. The staff were helpful and had a reasonable command of English.

Pretty much a regular ramen shop. Wait to be seated, someone will take your order. They have their house type or pork ramen. Our waiter spoke English and the menu has English translation and pictures to help. They have beer on tap. Count on around ¥1000 per person plus drinks. Nice size portion.
