Things to do in Cypress
Hidden in a strip mall across the street from Cypress College is a small, unassuming Japanese restaurant. Been coming back time and time again whenever we get cravings for home-style cooking without having to put on an apron. This place is always crowded and food never disappoints. A counter seat offers a close-up view of the food preparation and entertainment.Head chef is fun to watch, although serious faced, he treats his regulars regally! On this particular evening, happened to sit next to someone who kept snickering every time a dish was brought out, strange, but we laughed along. Turns out he was a regular (almost daily) so chef prepares surprise dishes so he never knows what he's eating! Most customers order izakaya-style, but don't worry if you can't read the Japanese writing on the wall, just select from the English menu which has familiar choices like tempura and udon. It's all good and oishii to the last bite!
Stopped here for lunch last week as we're huge Poke fans. Poke is like sushi, but less "constructed". For $8 you get a nice sized bowl of rice or salad or tortilla chips, topped with a protein (poke tuna or salmon or shrimp or tofu or others), a side (seafood salad, avocado, etc) sauce (from mild to very spicy), and you can add toppings like Masago, or garlic or onions or wasabi). For $2 more you get more of the protein, for $12 you get even more. Prices include tax which was a nice bonus. Food very fresh and tasty.

You can find a million Poke places, it's the latest craze. I enjoyed Poki Doki; good selection, not an overwhelming selection, easy to see all of your choices, fair prices, fresh fish, fish cut into bite sized pieces (excellent), pleasant wait staff (not snobby if this is your first Poke bar experience), instructions easy to follow. A large bowl comes with four scoops of fish. Other places provide five scoops in their large size portion. However the freshness of the fish is more important to me.
I stumbled upon this hidden gem looking for a place to eat lunch. I do a lot of driving for work, so when driving through Cypress...This was my first time going to a poki type restaurant. I didn't know what to expect. As I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff. They instructed me on how to order. It was amazingly good! If your a fan of sushi or any type of seafood, you will love this place.Prices were reasonable and everything tasted very fresh. I will be going back here, even if it's out of my way.Since I ordered my food to eat in the restaurant, they offered me free miso soup. If in the area, make sure to try it. You won't regret it.

Discovered Curry House when we lived in Cypress. Unique taste that you crave after you experience it! Katsu Curry (pork or chicken) is our family's favorite. They do a great job on the seafood Curry with rice pilaf as well. Staff is efficient and remembers you and your order! A rarity in customer service these days!

They have a large sushi rolls. Plenty to eat. Two rolls are almost too much for one person.. Their dragon roll and rainbow roll are good. None of the sushi is anything special. Small place. Nothing that I would say I have to go back for.

The black cod at a highly rated and expensive Japanese restaurant at Caesar's in Vegas was good. However, we found a better version right in our neighborhood in Cypress for half the price! Cypress may be known as hometown of erstwhile golf wonder Tiger Woods and for foodies, the US HQ of House Foods (Curry House, ubiquitous tofu packages sold at supermarkets, and partner of BCD Korean Tofu House), among others, I believe Cafe Hiro deserves greater name recognition. The entire menu with many choices is REALLY reasonably priced. E.g.: no menu-listed entrees over $30. Food quality and preparation are very good. We found out after seated that the chef was off on this Tuesday evening when we visited; the place was crowded nonetheless and our dishes were delicious. For appetizer, we ordered crisp whole dried shrimps, the daily special, (4 huge tasty shrimps with heads on for $8), Tofu salad, black cod, sea bass, spinach mushroom pasta and sea urchin pasta. The entree fish dishes came with salad (greens with yummy miso dressing, and pumpkin soup (too watery and lukewarm for my taste) served in a cup inexplicably without a saucer underneath. The atmosphere in this small restaurant (about a dozen tables) was nice. Service was adequate. I canât wait to go back again to try the Kurobuta (black pig) Pork.
