Reviews on Japanese food in Bangor, Maine, United States. The city of Bangor is perhaps most well known as the setting for many of Stephen King's stories, a reputation that has led to the nickname Transylmainia. There is more to Bangor than just tales of horror, however. There is a thriving arts scene, with museums, galleries, theaters, a symphony orchestra and a popular sidewalk art festival every summer. The area around Bangor includes the coastal Acadia National Park and the wooded Baxter State Park, providing plenty of outdoor adventure.

Walking in there is a greasy smell of a Chinese restaurant. The interior is nice and looks like other Chinese owned Japanese restaurants with tables and even well-tables, which are on wood floors (not tatami). At first glance them menu seems a bit Japanese, but as you read more you realize it is more Chinese than Japanese. The katsu was fine, but a bit greasy and served on a paper doily that may have worked better for cake, but fell apart and was mixed in with the veggies and meat when eating. The sauce was Chinese plum cause and the veggies were Chinese stir fry veggies - many with browned ends - cut up yesterday or earlier I imagine. The salad was topped with dried out and brown-ended carrots and celery. I suppose if one considers it more to be a Chinese restaurant and doesn't expect too much it is fine, but I would say it is a poor excuse for a good Japanese restaurant. The service was friendly and fine. The prices seemed hight to me for Chinese food.

My favorite dish has been changed- the teriyaki tofu used to be bite-sized pieces of marinated tofu in a nice teriyaki sauce. This time the tofu was in 2x3 chunks, not marinated and very little sauce. The vegetables underneath had no teriyaki sauce at all. Before, the bento box included fruit, but not today. When I asked for extra sauce it took too long to arrive. My waiter was slow to take my order and didnât return after food was served until halfway through the meal.
