Really disappointing. We had few choices as almost everything else was closed in this small town and we were in need of some late lunch. The service is very poor - unfriendly and slow. The pizza was almost as bad as a frozen re-heat, although the base was nicely cooked, and the soggy, lukewarm fries were terrible.

Aux Deux Oliviers

My wife and I just came back from having supper with friends on New Year's day. I have been to this restaurant before, but from what I understand, there's been a change of owners and the restaurant is now under new administration. The menu is more like a fusion of Italian mixed with an influence of French cooking. Lots of cheese and cream in the sauces and meals. If that's your thing, then you should be very happy. I would have preferred authentic Italian. Also, my wife has some dietary needs. She cannot eat dairy and there was virtually nothing on the menu with no dairy in it. The best that the waitress could offer, was a sort of veal parmesan, but without the cheese (it wasn't offered on the menu). Apparently, the restaurant is famous for its pasta. Naturally, I had a pizza. There were four to choose from, I think. It was a delicious pizza, a nice thin crust which was just large enough for one person to eat, but I'm not sure it was worth the 17 or $18 I paid for it. Many of our friends had different pasta meals and to be fair, they looked nicely prepared, but again, pricey for what you get.I started my meal first with a Caesar salad. Unfortunately, it was nothing special. Store-bought croutons and half the lettuce leaves were either white or yellow. I like my salads to be green, but that's just me. When I asked for a Coke, I was brought a Pepsi. No glass or ice. I was just handed an open can (like I get at any local hot dog/french fry place). Finally, we had dessert. There were only two desserts to choose from. A tiramisu cake or a triple chocolate cake. It was just a thin slice of cake that looked store-bought (I don't know if it was, but it wasn't anything special either). Here is a quick summary of our experience. Here's what I liked:Parking was plentiful (which is rare to find for many business in the Laurentians). Service was friendly. Beautiful restaurant inside & lovely decorations.Meals were nicely prepared and soups looked homemade. You can bring your own wine which helps save money. Here's what I didn't like: Although service was polite and friendly, it was inattentive and very slow. It took about half an hour or so from the time we place our order until we were actually served. I also ordered a drink when we place our orders and it seemed it was forgotten because by the time she served our meals, I still did not have my drink and I had to remind the waitress again. One of our friends had been placed near a loudspeaker which was playing music very loudly. So she had politely asked the waitress to turn the music down so she can hear all of us talk and while the waitress agreed to do that (very politely), it was never done. Although the meals were nicely prepared and tasty, it seemed a little expensive for what you got.The soups looked homemade, but forget about the salads and the desserts. They are really nothing special at all.Surprisingly, dietary restrictions didn't seem to be a consideration. To be fair though, this seems common with many restaurants in the Laurentians. Peanut allergies were not an issue so I can't comment on that. All in all, I probably won't return again. When I have exotic food, I like it to be authentic as much as possible. Many of the restaurants in the Laurentians are either French restaurants or like this place, a fusion of exotic with a French influence. I guess many people like that kind of thing which is probably why there are so many in this area. It's just not for me. If I go to an Italian restaurant, I want to try authentic Italian food. If I go to a Mexican restaurant, likewise. Or Thai and so on. Through no fault of the restaurant itself, I guess I'm just spoiled by the wide selection of exotic restaurants in Montreal that offer authentic meals...

Restaurant Esmeralda Sur-Lac

This Italian restaurant has been on our bucket list for a while and we finally got there. We were joined by my brother-in-law and his girlfriend. The menu offers a number of table d'haute and a-la-carte suggestions sure to satisfy any foodie. The wine list is short but the selection is good and the price is right. We were greeted at the door by the owner who made us feel welcome as he escorted us to our table. They have a nice balcony overlooking Lac Rond but the weather was a little cool and damp so we sat inside. The restaurant is small, cozy and well decorated with an Italian flare. The waitresses were very attentive and quick at suggesting a before dinner drink. Water was served to all at the table. For appetizers I chose Italian sausage in a gravy, my, Mussells, my B-in-Law ceasar salad and his friend had the cream of vegetable soup. My sausage came in a brown mushroom gravy; not quite a match and it was so-so, the mussells were very good but more than half them were meatless which the owner was quick at serving another order despite our insistance not to bother. The Cesar salad was small but OK and the soup was cold with very little evidence of veggies. For our main course I had a fish duo of salmon and grouper along with a veggie side, rice and a side of pasta. The pasta was overcooked in a delicious tomatoe sauce, the salmon was OK but the Grouper was half cooked (raw) and the veggies and rice were OK. My wife had a pasta duo of Pasta a la Gigi and a pesto ravioli - soso. my brother-in-law had a sirloin steak ordered med rare but came extremely rare, and his girlfriend also had the fish duo but hers was fully cooked. The desserts were home made and we were given all the details of these dishes by the owners wife, the pastry chef. She later returned and told us all about the history of their restaurant and how they came from Italy and settled here 36 years ago. After approximately $250.00 we all felt less than satisfied. All-in-all I doubt if we will return.

Le feu de bois

Pizzas artisanales croûte mince cuites dans un authentique four à bois. Pâte et sauce maison, ingrédients frais. A consommer sur place ou à emporter

Reviewed By AbridgedPause

Le Feu De Bois is a restaurant that we had been wanting to try for several months before we found out that their original location burned down. It took some time for us to realize that the new pizza place that opened a block up from the original shop was one and the same, though the new one is smaller and unfortunately easy to miss.We came in late one night just as they were closing up but the couple that owns the restaurant insisted to seat us and stay open later for our sake. The menu was well-stocked and as a first-time customer the choices were all too appetizing. We ordered 2 large pizzas which were both much too big for us to finish and we got some take-out at the end of the night. The thin crush was delicious and the service was amazing. The cost is above average for pizzas but they are well worth it and the price is completely justified. We will be going back as often as we can!The one thing that I could complain about, though this will not affect my rating, is that they are seldom open.Thank you so much for your detailed and amazing report. We hope you'll be able to make some time to visit us again soon!

We ate twice at this restaurant from a set menu (based on a local hotel deal) and enjoyed the experience. The menu choices were good, the food very nicely cooked (some dishes were outstanding), and the service pretty good.Tip: if parking in the nearby lots is full, just park outside on the main road, pulling in as tightly as you can - the locals don't mind and they do it themselves.
