Home to the oldest university in Germany, Heidelberg was hit hard during 17th-century wars and rebuilt in the 18th century with baroque buildings. For a pleasant walk, stroll through the historic city center's Gothic streets. Be sure to take in Heidelberg Castle, the symbolic heart of the city; Alte Brucke, a beautiful 18th-century bridge; and the Student Jail. Built as long ago as the 16th century, it was used to keep mischievous students off the streets for three days to a month at a time. And they say Penn State is the number-one party school!

Classical Italian cuisine in the middle of Germany. The locals go for pizza. The visitors go for the real thing. Superb service run by the Italian owner himself, ensure that the kitchen and the service are run properly. Very fresh ingredients ( eg: fish trucked from Genoa, just arrived ), and attention to execute the classical recipes, deliver very good classical Italian meals. The wine list is simple ( it could be improved ), but it has very good value wines. A place to come back.

Staying at the Marriott I decided to wander out and found myself at another hotel :). It was not clear after other reviews but I decided to try it because it looked lovely. The inside is very nice and spacious with comfortable seats and big beautiful windows. I had a super comfortable chair which I appreciate. For the daily special they had homemade pasta with Parmesan cheese and truffle. It was beyond wonderful to watch it prepared at my table. It is very simple with 3 ingredients - pasta, cheese and shaved truffle. What more could I need to power a long walk in Heidelberg? A draft of Heidelberger? They had that too. What a nice unexpected perfect lunch. Five stars and a big heart for love.

My wife and I had frequented the Italian restaurant in this location 20 years ago when we were assigned at the headquarters in Heidelberg. And we loved it. It has since changed names, but we made a return visit the other night with friends and our children. We weren't disappointed. The menus remain bi-lingual as well as the staff. The food was very good as well. Just as we remembered it. Although the American presence is gone, we'll always have some great German/Italian down the street from where we first lived. The staff was very helpful. Highly recommend.

Cesares Enoteca convinces with the combination authentic food and atmosphere.Food:The nicely small menu offers Italian classics, and all of which we had (3 courses) were of excellent quality. The three pasta choices were distinct in taste and texture, especially the orecchiette with sausages convinced with intensity and compactness. The tiramisu had the right size and composition, leaving the impression of being almost light - which is of course just an illusion ;) .Atmosphere:Normally I would separate between atmosphere and service - but here, the host Cesare personally makes you feel like a guest of the family. The menu is written on a chalk board only, and he explains it in detail with personal recommendations. Throughout you stay, Cesare hosts you attentively with Italian charms. We felt this style of service to be genuine and entertaining, just as we would expect from an authentic Italian restaurant. This level of personal attention is obviously only possible because the Enoteca is a small place with an estimate of 8 tables.Summary:If you are looking for an entertaining dinner with classic, quality Italian food, then Cesare's Enoteca is the right choice.

We visited September 2nd 2018. It was our first time in Heidelberg and we really enjoyed the city. We only were in town for one night so my wife finds this restaurant through google and of course TripAdvisor . Great reviews and after visiting and dining here I can see why. Really good Italian cuisine we being American our German wasnât good let alone Italian yet the hostess was able to understand us plus you canât go wrong with just pointing to items on the menu which was partly in english. I was feeling open and a little greedy so I opted for two meals though one was more so a starter the meatballs in lemon sauce which was like a soup. Never had it before but it was good wife said it was an acquired taste I beg to differ. We both love pizza so I had the don pepe and she had the salami pizza. Price was cheap compared to other places Iâve been ended up spending under 30â¬?! We will be back again the young lady(hostess) was very nice. We came on a Sunday it wasnât as busy but as we were leaving it started to be so maybe come early we sat inside. The atmosphere was friendly and inviting attire was comfortable though the setting could be casual with a bit of formality. Overall wonderful restaurant and compliments to the chef and staff weâll return.

This place is a hidden gem, a favourite among locals and Uni students. First, let me preface this review, I'm from San Francisco where I spoild, especially because of all the good pizza available in the city. Honestly, until I found Unter Freunden, I experienced culture shock because of all the terrible pizza in Germany. Before Heidelberg, I also lived in Berlin, but while I was there, I had to brace myself for a life without pizza:( One of my worst experiences in Berlin, was when my German friends invited me out for pizza. Suffice to say, I survived, otherwise I couldn't have written this review. Until I met Unter Freunden, I assumed Germans were suffering from some sought of sensory deprivation, because they seemed to enjoy pizza in Berlin. I lived in Heidelberg for over a year, before I discovered this restaurant; all I can say is: "better late than never". Apparently, pizza isn't dead in Germany, thank the heavens. In fact, this restaurant makes pizza that is as good as anything that I have eaten in San Francisco or any other city in the USA. This restaurant has renewed my faith in the human race, and, I am no longer suffering from culture shock, either.I'll give you a short low down regarding "Unter Freunden". First, they cut the pizza into square slices; they do the cutting with giant scissors (one for meat (a red one) and a green handled one for vegetarian pizza. Vegetarians don't have to worry about meat juices getting in their pizza, which is pretty common in all pizza restaurants. They have a great variety of meat pizzas and vegetarianâ ones, as well. They use scissors to cut pieces from big square pizzas, the preparation area looks like a giant checker board made of pizza. They weigh the pizza before you buy, this allows you to order a variety of different pizza slices, talk about choice! And, that's exactly what most people do, unless they stick with their favorites. All their pizza is backed really well, it's got wonderful airy texture. My criticism, is the unusual seating arrangement, many of the tables are small, as if they were made for children. The mismatching seats and tables look like they were all bought in flea market. I suppose, they are going for a "student's apartment" ambiance, it might even be appropriate here in Heidelberg, which is a famous German University town. But, if you are a tall person, it can be a little disconcerting, when all the "grown-up" tables are occupied.Nevertheless, I give this place five stars, and will probably eat there tomorrow. I don't eat pizza anywhere else in Heidelberg.

We arrived early in the evening, and watched as the restaurant gradually filled with a combination of local residents, businessmen and tourists. Quiet, friendly and attentive service bought antipasto misto, and aubergine stuffed with Parma ham and cheese, for starters; followed by spaghetti casa and home made tortellini with ricotta and spinach in a sage and butter sauce - all delicious. This is a good restaurant slightly off the main tourist track, and well worth seeking out.

I arrived at a late summer evening (with temperatures around 29 C.). I got a table out on the street, had good food (salad and pasta of the day) and nice German beer. That was good.

This restaurant is tucked away on a side street just beyond the bus and tram terminus but is well worth seeking out. It was a hot evening and we sat on a pleasant patio area with a fountain and garden visible beyond. The food was excellent, tasty and reasonably well priced. There was plenty of choice on the menu (no pizzas) and a specials board. The wine was good too. We were given an English menu and the staff spoke good English. They were all efficient and helpful. It appears a popular place so I would suggest booking.

We had some really good pasta for lunch here. Both dishes were fresh and delicious, the staff was friendly and the pricing not cheap but not too expensive either. Unfortunately the waiting time for the food was really long and there's plain bread, without butter or oil and balsamico served before the food.
