When we saw this hotel from the outside we werent expecting that much. It looked a fairly unexciting modern building on the main road up the valley.However once we got inside everything got much better.For a start despite them being closed on the day of our arrival everything has been nicely laid out so we could easily find our key plus other useful things such as breakfast times and WiFi codes. There was a number to call them if needed but because of their preparation there was no need.Our room was really lovely inside, with nice finishing touches such as wood on the walls and furnishings. The shower in the room was very big and had both an overhead sprinkler and one you could hold in your hand.Also the WiFi signal was nice and strong in the room.We also had a balcony that we could use for airing our clothes after a days walking.When you closed the door of the balcony you shut out all the noise from the road, which although isnt really busy does carry all the traffic going to and from Zermatt so isnt exactly quiet.Breakfast was really good and we also heard the staff their helpful guests make taxi reservations of looking up the weather for them, which is always a good sign.The price we paid was also good for what we got.This hotel is about a 400m walk from the centre of St Niklaus and the train station but given that most people are here for walking this shouldnt be a problem.As the restaurant wasnt open on our night in this hotel we went to the Monte Rosa restaurant, which served very tasty food at a good price. We had deer stew which was delicious.

You would not usually expect a restaurant on a station to be a destination in itself but this one could well be! We found Stalden to be a VERY quiet and sleepy town when we arrived there in search of a vet to sign our pet's passport one day in August. The restaurant has the some what unfair advantage of being pretty much the only place open in town in August but none the less the waiter and proprietor were both friendly and attentive and once we had put in our effort using out 3rd rate German did their best to serve us in English. I had a salad which came with a mountain of fresh bread and my husband had a pizza, both were very good and taking the exchange rate into consideration on a par with UK prices for that kind of establishment, perhaps even slightly cheaper actually. The dog was welcome and my husband could photograph passing trains from the comfort of his seat. Much of the clientele seemed to be local giving it an authentic feel. We, like most of the other patrons, chose to sit outside and enjoy the lovely weather and views of the mountain and village opposite.The Vet who is just around the corner and known by all the locals it seems (and comes highly recommended too by the way) only opens for a few hours in the afternoons. The restaurant is right next to the information office manned by a friendly gentleman who showed us a few walks in the area all starting from the station to while away the time. Since we did not have that much time to while away we chose the shortest walk taking in the bridges of the area which was meant to take 45 minutes. Though it was a lovely walk which we enjoyed immensely and I am sure a fit and healthy Swiss teenager could jog it in 45 minutes it took us considerably longer.Taking the short walk and then lunch at the station is a lovely morning out and if we did not need to see the vet I would have been sorely tempted to do one of the other walks in the afternoon to make a day of it.

Itâs a good Italian Restaurant, we got good lunch before continuing our travel to Zermatt. The food is fresh and authentic Italian at a reasonable price. Even though it was busy but we got our orders after short wait. The last time we were in Zermatt, we donât really enjoy the food there, it was overpriced and lacking taste, so this time we opted of stopping in Stalden for lunch.
