Most Popular Italian food in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, United States

Find out what Italian restaurants to try in Carlisle. With a long history dating back to before the American Revolution, it's not a surprise that Carlisle is full of historic treasures, including a church once attended by George Washington and a courthouse damaged by artillery during the Civil War. Despite this impressive heritage, the city is most famous for being Pennsylvania's "automotive capital," hosting ten annual car, truck, and motorcycle shows that are attended by a half a million people each year.

There is Italian. And then there's Italian American. This is just American - a third derivative. Think pizza for college students. Not Italian thin crust. Not Italian American. Just plain pizza w heavy crust & toppings - all the usual suspects. The spaghetti was enough for 3 people. The side salad not enough for 1. But its there if you want it - and if you understand what you are getting. They have beer (American) but you have to BYO wine. Fast & friendly service. Lots of parking. Good for big groups.

Vinny's Pizza & Restaurant

This was my first time to this classic 1970’s throw-back pizza joint, except back in the day I’m sure they did not offer as extensive a menu. There are many plastic booth seats complimented by 1980s banquet chairs at tables. I was greeted by a very friendly pizza boss who took my order and later made my pizza. Note that I do look to support local independent restaurants, but my reviews are what they are based on what it was or wasn’t.Usually when I dine at a place like this, I am compelled to try the pizza then flex on meatballs, chicken parmesan, or some other sandwich or entrée. This night the spaghetti and clam sauce caught my attention. The first question I had was did they offer linguine instead of spaghetti thinking it was a generic term used for pasta. He said no. Wow I had never had spaghetti with clam sauce. He saw my reaction and then said we do have fettuccine which I jumped on, along with a red sauce. Considering where I was, I was not expecting little-neck clams in their shell but did have an expectation around the sauce. This dish came with a simple side salad which was a good palate starter. They offer various size pizza and display them on a wall using real pans with the size and number of slices identified on them. I went with the thin 16” pizza ($11) cut into 8 slices. Note a 12” is $9 and a 14” $10 so the 16” is a great value. The pizza arrived right from the oven and looked very good. They have a very old Baker’s Pride natural gas oven which is a classic. As good as the pizza looked, it did not taste as good. The dough was chewy and tough, and thicker than I imagined since they called out thin crust on the menu. The sauce was more tart than sweet, and the cheese was not salty which to me is a plus. Overall, an average pizza which turned for the worse when I bit into a leftover slice that I took home and spit out a hair that was under the cheese! As for the entrée, I was taken back by the sauce which was nothing like I imagined even though my expectations were low. The sauce was a thick red-orange color like Campbell’s soup. In all the years I have been eating clam sauce I have never seen anything like this one. Clam sauce is traditionally delicate not heavy like Sunday gravy. This was a “yuge” disappointment. Here is the Wikipedia definition … “Clam sauce is a topping for pasta, usually linguine. The two most popular varieties are white, usually featuring minced clams, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and parsley, or red, usually a thin tomato sauce with minced clams. Other variants include the incorporation of whole clams, hot pepper flakes and other ingredients.” Note that the pasta was cooked perfect and the clams were minced. I did add some oregano and dry red pepper flakes which helped.

The Carlisle/Mt Holly Springs area is noted for its Sicilian style pizzas. Alfredo's is one of the best in the area. A nice thin, crispy crust goes perfectly with the sauce and whatever toppings you decide to go with. I prefer their mushroom and anchovies pizza but the pepperoni is good, also.

Yes, this is a strip mall Pizza shop, however don't let the location fool you. The pizza and subs are top notch. One room dining with plenty of space, this location does more pickup business than anything, at least for my friends and family. Their Grilled Chicken Salad is excellent and always fresh and their subs are served on in-house made rolls so always great.

I have been to George’s plenty of times for food. But on this particular day I didn’t go alone. I went with some family who had never been there. So as usual I got my sub I get from there which is an Italian sub. My family on the other hand was not sure what was good there. The staff was eager to help with any questions they may have had or what they would recommend. The food was great and everyone enjoyed it. We will be coming back.

We also had the Bomba for desert, it's a big round ice cream with a cherry center and vanilla & chocolate ice cream cream covered in hard dark chocolate. The food is great. Stop in and try it.

We were staying close by at the new Comfort Inn. This restaurant was close by the hotel and since we got in late at 7:00 p.m. on a Sunday we wanted something filling and quick. The staff was attentive and helpful. The place was very clean. My husband had a pizza and wanted roasted peppers on it but they did not have them. Instead they offered to saute some green peppers and add them to the pizza was really going the extra mile to accommodate him. I had a stromboli. Both were good. The stromboli was huge so had to take most of it back to the hotel! Just loaded with cheese. They do not serve wine or beer but I noticed the menu said BYOB.You can't get into this little strip mall from the front of the restaurant. The driveways to get in and out are in the back.
