Followed the advice from a fellow trip advisor contributor and had lunch there. It was a plain restaurant serving local food at a reasonable price. There was a notice that asked people to be accommodating as the waiting staff was not that young, and they were right - the staff was quite advanced in age but doing well none the less. The food variety was limited, not sophisticated yet acceptable. There was also a small local produce market attached.

Harappa Cafe 'IINE SHOKUDO' is a buffet styled lunch restaulant. You can eat anything as you like. After eating, please pay an amount that you feel is fair so that we may sustain our lives together. You may leave your pay into the box which is placed besi
Delicious Japanese buffet style lunch, many changing dishes to choose from. International style curries. At this Cafe, for the lunch service, you pay how much you feel your meal is worth in an honesty box. In the evening there is a pasta dinner service. This is a la carte. And priced accordingly. The staff for the lunch service speak English well. The evening staff are different and the English is not as good. This Cafe is also a wwoof host and often has volunteers from various parts of the world. Definitely recommend checking this place out.

The Skinny:Parking- paved lotPrice- cheapDecor- think Denny's, big roomy boothsService- exceptionally politeFood- pretty tastyCoke Factor- nicely carbonated out of a fancy machineThe first morning of our visit to Beppu my mom brought us here for breakfast. The menu is very similar to Denny's with bright colors and big pictures of all of the food you can order. So if your Japanese is limited, you can just point! Its funny because my hubby and I ordered the Japanese breakfast and my mom and stepdad (both Japanese) ordered the American Style breakfast. My order came with rice, pickles, miso soup, a fried egg, a small piece of fish, potato salad and shredded cabbage. I love the grated daikon touch, so delicious. I inhaled everything! My hubby had the same breakfast except he had mackerel and I had salmon. The pricing is completely affordable so if you are on a budget then you can eat heartily here for low cost.

It had the feeling of more of a lunch place rather than dinner, the food was quick and there was no English menu.We ordered the set menu 1 and a pork and beef dish (just by using the photos!). Personally didn’t like the pork dish but it was Russian roulette with ordering. The beef was fantastic and very good price - served on a bed of shiitake mushrooms and only 1,286 yen.The chicken which they are known for was also good and reasonably priced. It was good, enjoyable food and not somewhere if you want ambience / atmosphere but just a good feed!
