I am an exchange student from America studying at YPU nearby, so Joyfull is an easily accessible place to eat. Atmosphere-wise it's somewhere between a Japanese-style restaurant (as one would expect, it being in Japan) and a standard American diner, which I found rather neat. Being wedged in an area that's both very commercially and residentially saturated, it isn't the biggest place and won't seat too many people, but it does have booths big enough to accommodate a moderately sized group. It also has a (smaller) smoking area for anyone who prefers that. The servers there are routinely welcoming, even to foreigners, which may be a result of many foreign students coming in over the years. In most situations they allow you to seat yourself, though someone does typically greet you at the entrance beforehand when things aren't too busy. Silverware and such are brought out immediately, and while it's atypical, if you sit idly then waiters may check up on you to make sure your order's been taken. One interesting fixture is the electronic buttons at each table, which allow you to signal a waiter to come to you without needing to flag one down; they generally arrive within 30 seconds. A noticeable but reasonable flaw with the staff is an overall lack of English speaking skills, but even so, they usually know what to do so long as you can do things like point at a menu and present your receipt to the cashier at the front counter. In my experience meals have never taken too long to bring out, so overall I think the service is perfectly fine. The food itself is similarly so. The menu is best described as a mild fusion of Japanese & Western cuisine, offering some of the staple Japanese soups, noodles, and seafood dishes, but also having some more Western grilled or fried dishes. They sell salads, a variety of meat dishes, and some pasta & pizza as well. Many of them are still a bit different than what one might find in actual western countries, but they do generally taste close enough to be comparable. There's also a modest kids' menu that leans more towards the Western foods, and even if none of that appeals to you, they have french fries, which are about as genuine as you could want (as long as what you want isn't a ton of stuff on top). For desert, ice cream is the biggest staple, coming in parfaits as well as pancakes (no options for plain old butter or syrup, though), as well as a few kinds of cake. The drinks include some soft drinks but mostly teas, as well as complimentary water and a decent alcohol selection. Based on everything I've eaten at Joyfull, I can once again say that overall the food is just fine; not exceptional, but definitely good enough, especially if you're a hungry student looking for something simple.Unless you're absolutely starving, you can feasibly feed yourself there for within 1000 yen, and even a large group probably won't break the bank so long as you don't spend a ton on drinks. In all, I think Joyfull is a perfectly serviceable place for anyone who doesn't so much want a full fine dining experience or a pick-up-and-go one, but just something decent to eat. It definitely isn't the best Japan or even just Yamaguchi has to offer, but in a phrase "it'll do". And personally, I think "it'll do" pretty well.
