Last Saturday 28th Sept I took the train from E Croydon to spend time with my friend, Mandy, who lives at East Hoathly. We always meet at this delightful location where the staff are unfailingly charming, and the surroundings warm and cheerful. I was early and the staff invited me to get comfortable with a glass of iced water and lemon while I waited for my friend. During our time together we enjoyed hot chocolates and coffees, over really good, wide- ranging discussions. We shall return.Thank you staff for making the 35 mile rail trip worthwhile.

We were a group of 14 which included 5 children. The service was friendly and attentive and the kitchen more than coped with the large party size I have to say when presented with the menu my first impression was that this was quite pricey. Being such a large group we gave starters and mains a wide coverage and everyone thought the food to be very nice. The fact that the food was very good did just about justify the pricing. Were this more local we would be regular repeat customers. Well worth a visit

We happened to drop by after failing to find other pubs that could provide gluten free food. We are very explicit whenever we arrive somewhere that we need gluten free provision and were well received. The options were explained to us and it was clear the waitress understood our concerns (however not everything was perfect as we shall see later). We enjoyed our meals (Labs Liver and Lobster Burger). It was clear the chefs have talent and it was prepared with care. The desserts were a disappointment, which was sad because we rarely run to dessert and wanted it to be special. The gluten free choices were limited and only ice cream was available at that time (when there should have been other options like Panna Cotta or Creme Brulee). The cheese board was both impressive and disappointing at the same time. It fell foul of the same old problem that chefs forget to provision the cheese board properly and match the menu description. They think we (customers) don't notice, but we do; yes we do. The crackers were excellent, the chutney was excellent, the presentation was excellent, but the cheese - oh dear. Obviously purchased from the Monty Python Cheese Shop - certainly uncontaminated by the proper cheese! The menu says "A selection of local cheese". There are excellent small craft creameries in Sussex. You can even take a tour of them, but certainly this cheese board did not show any. It was stilton, chedder and brie. I know East Sussex is close to France, but I would not call it local. Tut tut. Now this pub is run by the local brewery. What if somewhere offered "local ale" and got Stella? How would they feel?Anyway, it was still good enough to come back the next day which we did. For the second dinner, during the beer festival, we had Hake and a gluten free (no roll) cheese burger. This was also excellent and having mash and salad with a grilled beef patty was just perfect, and again prepared with care. The care dropped with the dessert again, when a shortcake biscuit was added to the coeliac's plate. We rejected it immediately and obtained a fresh portion, which was done with no fuss, however. So, good, but as always, some room for improvement. We would like to see more dishes and desserts on the menu prepared for the gluten free diner as standard. Many places have moved to this model. The chef should also keep their eye on the larder provisioning (cheese). They also had local Sussex wines on the menu, but there was only one white and one sparkling. In this area they should have much much more, if they want to be a premier place for dinner options.

Booked one night stay. Read a few reviews but didn’t read enough! This place is grotty. Desperately needs decorating and refurbishment. Stayed in Room 6. Overlooks road and unfortunately the road was being resurfaced until midnight! Very noisy room from 6am with traffic meant little sleep. Bed linen was clean but carpet and bathroom looked shabby. Shower had no pressure and took 5 mins to get warm. Corridors were in awful state and smelled bad. Walked down to breakfast and asked immediately what I wanted! Hadn’t even seen a menu or sat down!. No cereal just cooked (that may suit some) Very disappointed. Single staff member didn’t ask how everything was and to be honest I saw little point in explaining as it was everything. AVOID!Dear Ian,Thank you for your review. As this is the only opportunity you have given for us to respond to the issues stated then I'll give my response here.If you book accommodation on a busy road then you can't be surprised to hear some road noise. Google Maps is a great tool to use to thoroughly research a property you had booked. Whilst there are some small improvements we need to make you should also bear in mind that you booked the least expensive option in the area. We have customers who come back time and again so there clearly isn't such a big problem as you pointed out. The corridor doesn't smell bad and is not in an awful state. The bathroom is due to be refurbished but is perfectly serviceable and clean and hot water does not take 5 minutes to come through.Breakfast is complimentary so we can offer what we like. We don't have a breakfast menu and it seems like a silly thing to complain about. You met me when you arrived and my partner was also working that evening. You met the owner, who did your breakfast, in the morning. There were 3 opportunities for you to come to us with a grievance. And you didn't. It says more about you than it does about us.Now for the roadworks. This was unavoidable. They had 1 night to do works directly outside the pub. They did it efficiently and quickly. They tried their best to minimise the noise and any disturbance. The fact that you are trying to besmirch a small business trying to make a living should keep you awake at night and not a bit of road traffic.

I always remembered this place as a run of the mill town centre pub, but The Rights of Man now has a separate restaurant and a hidden away roof terrace where I had lunch. The food is very good if a little pricey but did not disappoint.
