Things to do in Syria
For the best Fresh Fish in all of Damascus you must try the Sarghous Restaurant. It is located near Najmeh Square facing the entrance of the Orient Club. I do believe the old name was called âOceansâ. You enter the restaurant by descending a few stairs and the restaurant is very quaint and has an international décor. When you enter you have a cooler display on your right side that displays all the fresh fish, very European!! The manager mentioned that they bring the fresh fish daily from the Syrian port city of Latakia. You can select from a nice variety of fresh fish and shrimp, prior to sitting down at your table. We started with a few very tasty salads and then many, many appetizers. I highly recommend the oven roasted eggplant which is simply served on a platter and split open with itsâ top stem intact!! The shrimp and rice were great as was the small fried Sultan Brahmin or Red Grouper. They even have a great Sashimi served with all condimentsâ found in a great Japanese Restaurant. The only disappointment was the deep fried Calamari, which had a bit too much batter. The âhome-madeâ Tartar Sauce was really good. Finally, something you must not forget are to order the fried potatoesâ¦they were to âdie forââ¦Our entree was a great White Fish which was de-boned and was extremely tasty. They have a full menu of drinks and cocktails and the wine list had a bounty of white wines!! The best seemed to be a nice Lebanese Chardonnay. The service was tops and at times their appeared to be more servers than restaurant guest!!So for the best fresh fish in Damascus you must try the Sarghous Restaurant!!
A special dining pleasure awaits one that wants a great Ramadan Meal at the La Chaumiere Café and Restaurant. This recently refurbished restaurant is located in the Abu Roumaneh District of Damascus around what is now called: âRestaurant Squareâ.I had a great Ramadan Iftar or âBreakfastâ there last night. On our table were preset about 8 or 10 Arabic Appetizers, each better than the other. The main entrées consisted of a chicken and potatoes dish and a very unusual steak rolled around flavorsome rice called: âBismashkatâ. Since I do not eat meat or chicken the chef made me a special seafood dish with rice, which was extremely good! Unfortunately a mediocre desert was served, as before it all the plates were outstanding. The service was very, very proficient and professional and the restaurant has valet parking available as parking is scarce in this area of Damascus. Finally, the La Chaumiere Café and restaurant does not serve any alcoholic beverages, so after the Holy Month of Ramadan if you wish to indulge with a glass of wine or a beer it is not possible at the La Chaumiere.
There's not many good places in Lattakia. The Allegro's food was good, ate there twice in two days. Service was good and the place looks recently remodeled. Nice sidewalk cafe style seating outside or AC inside. I would recommend eating here and then getting out of Lattakia as quickly as possible. It's a terrible town and the rest of Syria is much friendlier and nicer.
The X/O Lounge and Terrace is located within the Four Seasons Hotel in Damascus. The Lounge is very, very nice and a great place to enjoy a light dinner or a night cap. What we really enjoyed was the X/O Terrace. The hotel enclosed the majority of the Outdoor Terrance with a thick, clear plastic sheet and have added gas Heaters. The temperature even at night is quite pleasant!!The service is very fast and professional. They have a Light Menu to select from and a wide selection of drinks. What we found many people enjoy is the chance to play either of nice game of Backgammon or a hand of Cards. Finally there is a nice Arabic Water Fountain in the center of the Terrance making for a very pleasant evening!!

The Three Tables Restaurant is a very new restaurant here in Damascus, Syria. We were invited there for lunch several times and it has been one of the best meals I have had in Damascus for many of years!!The restaurant is very, very small and hence the name as they do have only three tables!! It is located in the Abu Rumaneh District of Damascus, just one street behind Noraâs Grocery Store. It is a bit hard to find as it is small and on a back street!!It has very nice atmosphere and by being small added to this unique atmosphere!! The service is very, very fast and the owner is usually present to give you his recommendations for your entree. He has some imported beers and a small selection of wine. I do believe you can BYOB for the wine. I can confirm as we will be eating dinner there tomorrow night and the host did mention that it was OK for us to bring our own wine. I had several appetizers and a large salad where as my guest had a great grilled steak. All the food was great. We topped our lunch off with a homemade desert which was very tasty. The prices are very reasonable, thus making a return visit a must!!

The Chevalier Restaurant has been a main-stay in Damascus fine dining cuisine for many, many years. I do believe it was established in 1956 or 1958!What I most like about the Chevalier Restaurant is itâs true and constant consistency!! No matter when you dine at the restaurant you have the reliability of always enjoying a pleasant and enjoyable meal. The service continues to be second-to-none of all Damascus fine dining restaurants. They have added: Valet Parking, which is great as the parking in the surrounding streets is impossible to find a parking space; a new outside sign board plus the street side windows now are open so one can enjoy the: âfeelingâ of dining outdoors â almost! So in my humble opinion, the Chevalier Restaurant continues to be the best restaurant in all of Damascus.
