Primrose cafe is a small family run cafe on Holyrood street Newport. We offer breakfast, light lunches, cream teas, homemade cakes and scones, hot and cold drinks including our signature ice cream milkshakes, waffles, sundaes and chocolate sharing platers
My friend and I meet once a month in Newport, Isle of Wight, for coffee/hot chocolate and cake. There are so many cafes etc. to chose from and we usually have a good experience. We have visited The Primrose cafe once before, when we had a 'The Price is Wight' promotional deal and had a good experience. However, not so today! I think the lady behind the counter is the mother of the lady who bakes the cakes. When we first entered, I gave her a voucher from a magazine giving a 10% discount. I asked her if the voucher was still current and she mumbled at me that it was. Okay. We ordered a coffee and slice of carrot cake and a hot chocolate with a slice of chocolate cake. She served me a basic hot chocolate, not bothering to ask me if I'd like cream and/or marshmallows on top. I didn't say anything, as my friend was paying. The slices of cake are generous portions, and the carrot cake was delicious. The chocolate cake, however, was not. It was a Nutella cake and the topping was nice, but the cake itself was bone dry and hardly tasted of chocolate! We both tasted it and both agreed that it was not a good cake at all. At £2.95 a slice, it was a big disappointment.I took it up to the counter and said this to the lady, who just grunted at me! I said that she should mention it to the baker, but again I just got mumbled grunts! No apology and no offer to replace it with something else.I had taken a business card off the counter when we first arrived, as I shall be running a holiday letting business from May 2018 and I'm building up a folder of places to recommend to guests. After we'd left the cafe, I looked at the card properly and on the back there were 8 circles to be stamped every time you bought a hot drink there. When all 8 are stamped, you get a free hot drink. This was not mentioned to us on our first visit, only last month, or today. We should have 4 stamps and be half way to our free drink! We shall not be going to that cafe again and I will not be putting their details in my folder for holiday guests.Thank you for your review. I am very sorry that your trip to our cafe was not as we would expect and that the chocolate cake you had was not up to standard. I believe cake should always be an enjoyable thing so I am upset that this was not the case. If you would like to contact me at [email protected] will see what we can do to restore your faith in us and let you know what steps we have taken to ensure this does not happen again. Kind Regards Fiona

A very distinguishing and distinctive place where Gigi's personality is in every item around. Gigi cooks most of the food at moment, so everything is really fresh and prepared with attention and passion.Even if this place was originally born as a bakery (unfortunately we missed the English cream tea because we stayed only for a day in Newport), we eat two tasty seedfood dishes. Portions are very big and full of fish, so they are worth the price. We also ate two fantastic desserts, a home made strawberry sorbetto and a strawberry pavlova - both made with fresh strawberries, amazing. When Gigi knew it was our 10th anniversary, she gave us a carrot jam, a typical one from Egypt, her native country. She is very sweet and you can immediately see that she loves what she does. The waiter was nice too, but a bit apathetic! A bit in contrast with Gigi's personality! Maybe he was new or it was just a bad day for him...anyway he was always kind.Dear madam veronica Thank you for your lovely review. My little tea room and seafood restaurant has got massive room for hospitality and love to let the guests to enjoy and relax, I am happy that you had a great evening surrounded your special occasion.Regarding the waiter he is nice, kind and this is the first job for him so that's why you felt the lake of communications . I do apologies I should confirm that he is under his first week training.Your name means true image and victory, I am sure after our wonderful conversation, that it is matching your soul too as you explained every thing as your eyes seen it and your heart felt it.Your review is a true image and victory for my business.Kind regards Gigi bakery

It is a restaurant in it's own right , without the hotel - a majority of bookings are from locals & non-residents
After two excellent meals elsewhere in Cowes, I wasnât expecting anything special in a hotel restaurant, but we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and the friendly and efficient service that brought it to us. My ham hock terrine starter and seafood pasta main were each tasty, well cooked and a generous portion. Prices are reasonable. A good dining experience.Dear NicholasThank you so much for your comments we really appreciate them. We are so glade you enjoyed your experience with us at the New Holmwood Hotel in our restaurant. I will pass your remarks onto our team and look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.Best regardsJulian
