The food was good. Outstanding location across from the Tourist Information Centre. Chairs against the wall for the plethora of people waiting for a table. One of the best priced places in town. You won't see many of these restaurants in Japan. Curmudgeonly Oji-chan asleep at the till waiting for the next taking. A man of few words, lots of gestures and grunts. Two older ladies trying their best to get the food out as fast as possible but given everyone's ages, this is not a quick serve restaurant. Self serve tea and water. Outstanding experience. Reminiscent of days gone by. But understandibly different than the standards set by most other restaurants in Japan. We very much enjoyed the restaurant, the staff, the mix of guests but can understand why others would be a bit frustrated. Would definitely go back.

Ate the beef udon in this small and unassuming shop. Didn't expect much but the flavours were great. 3 weeks in Japan and this shop served the best udon I had tasted. It wasn't super chewy like most places and the texture was just very special. The elderly woman preparing our dishes was very nice too though she can't speak English.

We went here after a visit to okunion's kobo daishi shrine. It seemed to be one of the few places in Koyasan that serve meat. We really enjoyed our set meal at a decent price of 1100Â¥. It was delicious and filling - exactly what we needed. They have an english menu and the staff speaks basic english.

At the other end of town from our lodgings at Yochi-In, this bohemian cafe was thankfully open and much welcome after our stunningly beautiful and highly memorable early-morning walk amongst the beautiful shrines of this wonderful hill-top town. The team behind the counter were charming and the whole place was very engaging. The coffee was good if not great and the chocolate cake made an agreeable substitute for a unhealthy English fry-up.
