Reviews on Indonesian food in Pekanbaru, Sumatra, Indonesia. Pekanbaru (Jawi: ڤكنبارو, Chinese: 北干巴鲁; pinyin: Běigānbālǔ, Dutch: Pakanbaroe), is the capital of Indonesian province of Riau, and a major economic center on the eastern part of Sumatra Island. It has an area of 632.26 km² with a population of 1,093,416. Located on the banks of the Siak River, which drains into the Strait of Malacca, Pekanbaru has direct access to the busy strait and was long known as a trading port. Pekanbaru was originally built as a market by Minangkabau merchants during the 18th century. Its name is derived from the Malay words for 'new market' ('pekan' is market and 'baru' is new).

I know this restaurant since I was tenager more than 40 years ago. A s far as I know this is the oldest and most well known Minang traditional food in Pekanbaru. All its dishes are very delicious and the most special one is its rendang.

We went in search for this canteen after reading the reviews. It was as per expectation. The place was small but it had an extension in the building beside. The "ketupat sayur gulai paku" was good. The "satay kerang" was not bad. We tried the "teh telor" but it was too sweet. We don't think it was necessary to add sugar after they added sweet condensed milk. We think locals have sweet teeth. The bakwan or deep fried flour & vege was interesting.Overall worth the visit to know what the fuss is about. Will go again.

Come at a perfect time to get parking easily. At lunch time, there will be many customers having lunch there. If you like to come again, it's good idea to have its phone number for reservation of a table and meal.

I'm a regular client. This mean good. Coz I'm kinda picky that I'm willing to spend more money to taste anything good, rather than cheap but bad taste. My whole staffs in the company love it. The restaurant consist of 2 floor. The 2nd floor has AC and quieter (They play Dangdut all day long). But most important is the food, isn't it. The taste is fantastic, and it's cheap. Really recommend it.

Big open restaurant full of families and groups. We went with a large group in an evening and all sat at a big long table. Food served family style. All very good with plenty of veggy options. Some unusual dishes but we liked every one of them. If you ask nicely they might even find you a cold Bintang but it isn't on the menu. And they take cards which can't always be assumed ok in this part of the world.

This is one of the most popular restaurant in Pekanbaru. The food is good, especially âUdang Galahâ (big prawn). The Patin fish is also good. The service is good, friendly and quick. Overall, a very good experience.

My business partner brought me here for lunch. Well the location is around city center. The place is big and convinience (no aircon). The service was good, they got lots of staff. And lastly the taste is good with moderate price.

Restaurant is clean though located off the main street. Looks very ordinary and not that many diners. We were sceptical at first, thought we made the wrong choice. We had the chilli crab, black pepper crab, honey prawns, squids, friend rice and all tasted beyond our expectations. A must try for seafood enthusiasts.
