Cheap food, great service, dossas to die for (we had the masala dossa with potato). Also had a refreshing mint lemonade drink. Also quaint decor and clean. Only downside: no wifi. No biggie though as the manager helped us to book an uber through his cellphone.Highly recommended.

The Raj

During my recent trip to South Africa, I dined twice at The Raj in Johannesburg. I'ts located in the Nelson Mandela Square Mall, which was across the street from my hotel. Despite being located in the mall, don't be put off. It is well-maintained and gives the appearance of elegance, with nice table settings and soft lighting. On my first visit, I had the fish Malabar, which was flavorful and spicy, accompanied by some palak paneer (spinach), rice and naan. On the second visit, I tried the Goanese Crab curry. The flavor was explosive and well spiced, but the crabs unfortunately come in the shell and they are tiny, which makes extracting what miniscule amount of meat tedious and unrewarding. I eventually gave up and just pigged out on the naan and curry sauce - divine! You can't find Indian beer in South Africa, due to import restrictions, so I had Stella Artois on draft, which was a huge mistake; the flavor was off, and in fact, I don't think it was Stella at all. Stick to bottled beer instead. Staff was friendly and efficient, and they were very accommodating. My understanding is the place is owned by a doctor, and he brings in chefs and some other staff from India. Very well played, Doc; I will definitley return!

Was craving for a traditional desi Pakistani curry and was recommended this place by friends. Be warned to be careful as this area fordsburg is notorious for its crime and I would recommend you go in groups. Saying that I got no bother at all and me and my brother both walked the Main Street, Mint street, parked our car in front nearby and paid a local 10 rand to keep a eye, I think that’s there self made job as they all offer there parking and security services lol. Don’t be afraid these guys are humans and they do talk. I would say like most countries it’s the minority that mark this beautiful country. As for the food at this place it was ok and if I’m really hungry I would go again but unfortunately nothing to rave about.

I was treated to birthday lunch and accompanied a friend to Bay Leaf. It was a great experience, seeing as this is a place I didn't even know existed.Service was friendly and efficient with food reaching us speedily. My friend ordered for us - mild chicken tikka for me and hot for her. Delicious and crisp outside while soft and flavourful inside. Decor is very basic, but you go for the food and the smiles.
