Two ostrich-feather booms, during 1865-1870 and 1900-1914, truly established the settlement. With approximately 60,000 inhabitants, it is the largest town in the Little Karoo region. A group of us stopped off for brunch, and although the place was very quiet, it took ages to be served. Staff were dressed in their own clothes, sitting at a table, so were difficult to know who were staff. Food wasn't great, the scrambled eggs were a huge portion, and were topped with a bright yellow sauce

The sushi at Karoopot is surprisingly good. Unfortunately that same cannot be said for the service. After waiting half an hour to order I got up to ask inside if someone could take my order. The woman at the reception counter looked up and briskly told me to wait for a waitron! Really? Expecting your order to be taken in less than a half hour is unreasonable? Yes, in Oudshoorn it is.
