Reviews on Guatemalan food in Chichicastenango, El Quiche Department, Guatemala. Chichicastenango, also known as Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, is a town in the El Quiché department of Guatemala, known for its traditional K'iche' Maya culture. The Spanish conquistadors gave the town its name from the Nahuatl name used by their soldiers from Tlaxcala: Tzitzicaztenanco, or City of Nettles. Its original name was Chaviar.

Chichicastenango is not a place to go for fine dining.just to get a good satisfying meal is enough. There are other reasons why we're here. This restaurant is clean and attractively decorated. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. David had the Tinamit Special for lunch consisting of four meats, fried potatoes, salad, soup and tortillas, all for 75 quetzales. I had a mixed vegetable salad for 45 quetzales and a picador of papaya and pineapple. We left satisfied.

Our local guide dropped us here, and upstairs we went. Crowded restaurant on market day with ONLY tourists....didn't see a local here! Busy, unfriendly, large menu, but really not that great.Thought it was quite expensive - but then, it was market day...have to get the $ while you can.Really nothing special.

My large group of 12 had breakfast almost every morning at this lovely upstairs restaurant. We pre-ordered our breakfasts because we were a large group.Had something different each day - and they were all wonderful.(scrambled eggs, fruit plate, waffles, pancakes......)They have free WI-FI and on the day they forgot to bring the modem in, someone went home and got the device and brought it is......so we had our WI-FI.The best service and food.

Don Pascual was recommended for its WiFi, which is very good, and the bonus was delicious food. I had chile relleno--stuffed chile with rice and beans--and they substituted the ground meat stuffing with a chicken/vegetable stuffing that was excellent. Very large liquados (smoothies) of melon and banana quenched our thirst. There is a balcony for al fresco dining, the best part of which is that it overlooks the famous indigenous market with the Santo Tomas church beyond. There are two tables inside with electric plugs in the wall--a major advantage when one's computer needs charging! Don Pascual will definitely get a return visit the next time we are in Chichicastenango.

We stopped here for lunch after visiting the colourful and bustling street markets. Service was a little slow due to the place being very busy, but it was polite and attentive enough. The food was very tasty, though my portion (tacos) was somewhat small. My friends both enjoyed their meals, along with the warm atmosphere which included many flowering plants and parrots living on the central square.
