Having read that a trip to San Sebastián wouldn't be complete without a visit to one of local cider houses we decided to visit Lizeaga Sargorategui in Astigarraga. Astigarraga is nearby hill town outside San Sebastián that is worth the visit. Although ridiculously close to San Sebastián it can be a little confusing to get to the town as we found ourselves driving past multiple times and ended up in a family's turn of the 20th century farm. Chances are they hadn't seen a foreign face in ages if not a lifetime. We finally found Lizeaga and boy, were we treated to a real deal cider meal. Let's start with saying that the restaurant nothing but a small cave which houses giant vats of fermented apple goodness. The smells of charcoal burning meat mingling with the ripe and slightly pungent smells of fermenting apple and the mustiness of a cool cave. We were seated at a giant wooden picnic table, given no plates, and asked if we wanted the traditional cider menu. We sheepishly replied yes and let the food orgy begin. It all began with txistorra in cider, a typical soft sausage bathing in a pool of warm cider. The txistorra, happier than Hugh Hefner at the Playboy mansion's hot tub was the perfect start to the endless parade of food that followed. Cod omelette, fried cod with onions, Flintstones-sized steaks, bread to mop all the deliciously flavors from each dish, and yes, cider, plenty of cider. Just when we thought it was over and in submission mode, a giant platter of Idiazabal cheese, membrillo, cookies and local walnuts was brought to the table to make sure we didn't leave hungry. Did I mention that all of this cost only 25 euro a person? Ordinary meals come and go but meals like keeps us satisfied for a lifetime. Find Lizeaga and go. Your stoomach will thank you.

We were a group of friends celebrating a lunch. Food was outstanding and so was the staff too. I highly recommend this place.

My husband and I ate at this restaurant in Martetune, San Sebastian, twice. Both times it was fantastic. The food, the wine, the service, the staff and their suggestions were impeccable. They even took our photo--and we, theirs. In addition, the bill was surprisingly reasonable for the quality they deliver. We were there in October and November 2013. You will not be disappointed!

It's an excellent place to go with friends and even family. The menu is amazing and the portions are quite big, so make sure you don't eat any pintxo before lunch!
