What do semi-informed outsiders think of Essen, Germany? Immediately certain images pop to mind: Krupp, Thyssen, steel works and coal mines, old smokestacks dominating a grimy neglected industrial town. Some Germans still refer to the place as âAlter Ruhrpottâ (freely translated: Old Mine Pit) â not very complimentary and without much nostalgia. The spitting image of worn-out mining, steel towns like Pittsburg, or Youngstown in the States). Well, no longer so for Essen⦠Okay, the traces of this industrial legacy are still remembered in Essen, possibly occasionally celebrated too. But thereâs also a new Essen, and surprisingly fashionable, definitely friendlier, and much greener too. On a short trip there, my hosts were kind enough to make the visit more informative, give a quick city-tour, point out the contrasts with days gone by, and toward the late afternoon, early evening took me to a rustic contrast of my industrial image of Essen. It was the âAlte Fähreâ Restaurant, with a view on the river Ruhr⦠Well, river in parentheses, rather a gentle well-mannered brook, a stream perhaps heading, hoping to meet a river somewhere. The âAlte Fähreâ is a bit on the outskirts of Essen. Itâs a pleasant old, colorful farm structure. Itâs more like what Germans call a âBiergarten Gasthofâ, a former farm dressed-up into a cozy restaurant, and fronted by a large outdoors terrace garden. Of course, because of the balmy evening that day, I didn't get to see much of the inside, just briefly in passing, on my way to the impeccably clean bathrooms. The outside arrangements were simple - long wooden tables lined up in a row in close proximity for the Ruhr River view⦠Of course, my hosts being German, reservations had been made and including a table strictly for our own party. At other tables around us, clearly, some space sharing was going on, on a busy laid-back evening. Be aware, this sometimes happens in Europe... But have no fear - excellent way to make new friends, break the ice. The âAlte Fähreâ is billed as âinternationale Kücheâ ("Küche", meaning kitchen, meaning dishes from everywhere), but in fact, thankfully, many of the choices on the menu were very German. Service at this restaurant was professional, pleasant and prompt. The drinks came around quickly. I think I had a Warsteiner brew - excellent. The food did even better: I only know for a fact what I had: "Leberkäse" (a fine ground German or Austrian meatloaf), browned in the pan, loaded with pan-fried onions and potatoes, and in my foody fantasies, sometimes plainly irresistible. My hosts had settled for local classics such as mixed endive with sautéed black pudding (pan-fried blood sausages), and a creamy chanterelle mushroom dish on homemade bread dumplings. It was all plate service, huge portions, and fresh salads served separately. As anyone who has spent time in Germany knows, the German "Küche" is excellent, generous, and generally not too indecent in terms of pricing either.

We had a wonderful lunch with family and friends. The business lunch of homemade boar ham with feldsalat and Rinderfiletmedaillons with mustard sauce and potato puree was excellent value at â¬21.50. Also notable was the cinnamon octopus and the thyme and pear sorbet. The castle is spectacular and forms a perfect backdrop for a special occasion.Dear guest,Thank you for the attentive, positive assessment of your visit to our restaurant Hugenpottchen at the Schlosshotel Hugenpoet. We are glad that you praise the quality of the food as well as the price-performance ratio. Thank you very much.Since May 2016 we have opened a second restaurant on the Schlossgelände: the Laurushaus, a fine dining restaurant under the direction of Erika Bergheim. You are welcome!Best regardsAlexandra SchenkDirector

We went there for a family event and we couldn t have found a more suitable, friendly place, relaxed with honest and excellent food served by very friendly, personal and attentive service. Every dish was served "Ã point". My Schnitzel would win every "Schnitzel-Test" and all the other meals looked so delicious that we need to come back soon to get more of this super tasty food.I especially like the styling of this small, casual chic and cosy restaurant which hits the taste of time. The hosts were absolutely professional and very friendly with attention to detail. As Aperitiv we had a wonderful drink called "Schiffer s Brause", that contained Prosecco with Lime and another ingredient, lovely decorated with some Rosemary.Werden, this little market town and part of Essen with it s "Fachwerk" traditional houses does already have some very good restaurants, mainly Italian. It definitely need a new restaurant like "Schiffer s" with very authentic, superb German cuisine. For a warm Summer evening there is space in the backyard for "al fresco dining" outside.Highly recommended!

Last week I was in Wupperthal with a collegue and I decided to eat something special. I called some friends, chefs members of Jeune Restaurateur d'Europe, and they suggested me Haus Stemberg in Velbert. So I decided to try it and I wasn't disappointed.Despite to its position, just along a road, this charming country house similar to a mountain resort hides one of the best chef in this part of Germany. The list is not very long and this is a good thing, because they choose only the best seasonal ingredients that are cooked to maintain all the natural flavours but showing the chef character that put its original touch on every plate (and that's why he got one Michelin Star!).Accurate staff and careful service, excellent wine list and unbelieveble cheeses cutting board give to everyone other reasons to not miss this lovely restaurant.
Great place to eat staff are very helpful and food is excellent qualityWe ate about 4 times during our stay and every meal was well presented and tasty

The restaurant is attached to a golf club and looks out over the golf course, so the view is very pleasant. The food was good; we particularly enjoyed the Spaghettini with Gorgonzola, apple and walnuts, the asparagus creme brulee, and the stuffed maischollenfilet. The Grauburgunder was good value at â¬22 per bottle and the overall bill of â¬180 for four was very reasonable

Friendly service in a nice restaurant with a lot of privacy! Dinner was perfect with very tasty croatian food. In spite of the restaurant was very crowded, we had not to wait long for our dinner. Good menu!

I like to drive around Dûsseldorf and during last weekend we ended up in Mülheim an der Ruhr at the time of the diner. We entered in the restaurant Walkmuhle and immediately were surprised about the warm welcome we received. We were lucky enough to have a table in front of the open fire (not working during the warm days but I can already imagine myself during the winter were a fire would be crackling softly giving to the room a great romantic and relaxing ambiance). Sergey, the owner, gave us advices on the menu and it was great advises. We ate like kings, oysters, dorade fish, I took a steak cooked with a 800c professional beafer. Just amazing. While eating, the table next door ate some pasta with mushroom prepared inside a big parmesan cheese and I promised myself to come back to try it.Thank you a lot. We are ever glad to see you again. See you.
