The George and Dragon at Swallowfield

A traditional country pub serving fine food, wines, draught ales and lager. An informal setting in the heart of the Berkshire countryside, easily accessible from Reading, M4 and London. A great place to celebrate, meet clients, enjoy a Sunday roast or jus

Called in here for the first time last Saturday and it will not be our last. Charming country inn with a nice selection of decent ales and a good food menu. Like a lot of places these days seems to cater mostly for people wishing to eat, but a fair few people outside and in the garden. Warmly greeted and shown to our table in a cosy little booth type setup, very nice touch. Service was all smiles unhurried but efficient.Starters were paprika dusted whitebait, huge portion easily shareable couldn't really detect the paprika, no matter, it was delicious. The other was a duo of melon with parma ham again really good. Mains were seabass, nicely cooked with a crisp skin and calves liver, cut a little thick but ok for me, both dishes very good. No room for desserts but finished with coffees. Total cost of meal £77.60 included on the bill was a 10% service charge. The service charge grates with me but I felt was worth it do said nothing. Feel service should be my decision not theirs! There is a circular walk starting at the pub which we will try next time. Well worth a visit.

Been here a few times now (not through choice) and feel compelled to add review. Drinks well over priced for the area (£5.40 for pint of Peroni) and even the bar staff were apologetic. If unfortunate to go in when there is a football match on, you will be subjected to it in every facet of the "pub" (including the garden) at a volume that makes normal conversation nigh on impossible, whilst plastic supporters do their pathetic best to out whoop each other whenever they look up from their mobile phones during the game. Not there on my most recent visit, so hopefully changed, but landlord rude and ignorant as well on previous ones. Don't give two hoots about the food. If I wanted to eat, I'd go to a restaurant or if they were available, which they're not, I'd buy a bag of nuts. Nice historic building so shame this is now such an abhorrence and antipathy of the traditional inn. Money is king and it's always busy but not for me thanks. Plenty of other far nicer establishments in the vicinityWe’re so sorry to hear that your time with us was unsatisfactory. If you would like to be contacted by us to discuss your experience, please privately message us with your contact details and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.
