Having just arrived in Courtenay for the final evening of a 10-day visit to Vancouver Island, we hoped we could find a restaurant that could serve up a memorable meal. Using TripAdvisor as our guide, and the relatively small size of the city to facilitate exploration, we drove around and through the town until we settled on an elegant-looking establishment downtown, the Atlas Cafe.“Cafe” is an understatement, as it is a full-service, full-menu restaurant with a small bar. After a ten minute wait, we were shown to a quiet window table and studied the menu, which had a insert that listed the evening’s special dishes. The one that stood out for me was the House Smoked Turkey Drumstick ($22), which was served as a giant club of meat and bone, beautifully smoked, and resting upon an absolutely delicious melange of vegetables, described on the menu insert as “arbol chili jus and local corn succotash with Fitzgerald Farms’ Swiss chard, padron peppers and paddy pan squash”. See if you can spot all these ingredients in the accompanying photo.I seldom am unable to finish a dish, especially when it is not preceded by an appetizer, but as good as this dish was, it bested me.Across the table, Madame has a large bowl of mussels in a light sauce with toast that she raved about ($17).We brought our own bottle of wine ($20 corkage). The dessert menu looked great, but there was no space left to put it.So our mission - to have a memorable meal on our last night on the Island - was accomplished, in a most enjoyable way.

Consistently good spot to eat. We ordered a lamb burger and jambalaya. The lamb burger was juicy flavorful and great value for your money. The jambalaya was disappointing, it should have been filled with lots of sausage shrimp but was mostly peppers and a few of the meats. Ordered medium spicy and unfortunately it just tasted like it had a hot sauce on the whole dish. It was served over rice. The waitress was very informative about the specials and the service was fairly good. We will go back, just won't have the jambalaya.

Absolutely delighted about their pizza, it's about time that someone has created a healthy and delicious pizza with local ingredients. Jason and his team at the Gladstone are friendly, fast and and even willing to alter ingredients based on your desires. My boys love meat and they were very accommodating and even provided suggestions. They also have the handmade frozen food they offer at 534 5th Street that is easy to cook and superb to eat. It's once again prepared with locally sources ingredients, handmade on site and conveniently packaged. Check them out, you won't be disappointed.

We dropped in for an early dinner. Busy place, oh my. Food came quickly and was very hot and tasty though perhaps not what we expected. Dishes: Pad Thai and Singapore Cashew curry. Good value. The spring rolls were pretty awful....tasteless pork filling. Will try the gyoza next time. The only downside perhaps is how noisy the place is with the concrete floors and steel roof/ceiling...and lots of metallic banging from the open kitchen with the woks in full use....might not bother the younger folks. Very difficult to hear anyone with a soft voice. Will do take out next time. By the time we left at 6 PM, there was a line up nearly out the door...good success story for this Victoria-based franchise. They were still waiting for their liquor license as of May 7. Pale ale or lager would be perfect with this food!Thank you for your feedback! I'll pass along your feedback regarding the spring rolls. We appreciate your support and are glad to hear that you enjoyed your first visit to our Courtenay location. - Matt
