During our week long stay in the area, we visited Saulieu several times - generally for shopping. We had lunch here twice and greatly enjoyed it. It is a typical French provincial place serving nice food at very reasonable prices. It was clear that the locals eat and/or drink there. Nothing fancy but all very acceptable. Recommended

After spending the weekend at Bernard Loiseau, we stopped here for lunch before driving home. What a treat. Completely charming dining room, below a small hotel. A large open hearth where the meat is cooked. My wife and I had the mixed grill. Everything was cooked exactly to perfection with nice vegetables on the side. And the meat was very high quality. The owner / chef was very nice and shared a few interesting stories about Saulieu. Highly recommended.

We fell in here by chance guided by the number of tradesmens vans parked outside at lunchtime, always a good sign.Very well cooked traditional French food using good ingredients at a 'routier' price. Just the sortof place you hope to findbut seldom do nowadays.

The cafe is packed in summer, outside seating is extremely nice and coffee plus croissants excellent.

After a week travelling around France, we expected great things from Saulieu, the gastronomic centre of this region. Looking around the town though, our expectations quickly evaporated. Gourmet City this is not. Unfortunately our meal here tonight was, although enjoyable, not at the top of the pile. The one and only waiter struggled to cover all the tables punctually, and there were only six tables occupied. My starter of prawns and smoked salmon in a ginger soft bread with a tomato sauce accompaniment took 'variety of flavours' to a new level. The beef main course was quite small but tasty. Similarly the Monkfish main course, especially the 'small' bit. Wine was not cheap at â¬22 for the cheapest red, by far the most expensive table wine of the week. Overall, not a bad meal by any means, but there's much better out there. Maybe not in Saulieu though.

I've never been to a restaurant that has such a rude, arrogant, whining restaurant manager. We arrived 15 minutes late having driven 300 miles to get there and the restaurant manager basically told us we should have left earlier! Everything was a chore. To cap it all, our group was overcharged by EUR 20. If you value good service and honesty, don't come here

Some really interesting dishes waiting to be explored in a pleasant ambience; alas, dear customer, you need patience, much patience, as the service is abysmally slow. Two hours (!) passed before the dessert - which the waiter had insisted to be ordered along with the two previous courses - appeared, without the smallest trace of an excuse/explanation, by the way. The bread arrived when we were half way through the main course. For the wine, a simple rosé which, down the road they sell for less than 10 â¬, they charge 28 â¬; but don't expect your glasses to be refilled by anyone but yourself.

This misquote small and on the main road (which they tell you if you book an outside table) Rather good house cocktail involving gin, salt, fizz and something else. the carpaccio was very good - local cows feature menus round here. The pasta had been written up approvingly here so we had that but I thought mine with vegetables rather bland. Husband had bolognese and liked it but, honestly who orders pasta bolognese, a house staple? But whatever you have, save room for the cafe gourmand: strong black coffee and five little desserts including iles flottant (my favourite ) and nutella tiramisu. Yum!

Gourmet travellers and Michelin-mad bon vivants alike have been making their pilgrimage to this fabled address of French gastronomy ever since Bernard Loiseau opened the doors to his decadent hideaway in Saulieu. The legacy of Loiseau is still a strong fo
Gracious yet friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere and then the gastronomic treats; they discreetly arrive, and keep appearing, in momentous purity over the next four hours. Captured essence in glorious mouthfuls. Never ever thought that I would have had the privileged of such an evening. Well now I have....and I believe that the mantle remains in Saulieu, on Monsieur Bertron's modest shoulders. Merci beaucoup.
