We had dinner at the Gantxo twice during our stay in the Basque countryside near Guiche. We ended up there unexpectedly on our first night with 3 hungry children after a long day of travel, and had a stunningly delicious meal. We liked it so much that we were back a few days later. The menu is very short (4 appetizers / 4 or 5 main courses and 3 desserts), but everything we ordered was cooked and presented to perfection. It confirmed our opinion that the Basque cuisine is the best in the world. The restaurant is a very good choice or families as they offer a kids menu with either meat or fish, also delicious, and there is a playground just outside the restaurant where your kids can relax while waiting. Service is efficient and pleasant and we realized people travel quite a bit to come to this restaurant. The patrons included French people as well as foreigners (British) vacationing in the region - so they probably speak English. The restaurant is next to a Pelota room and you can watch people playing the game. We will definitely be back if are again in the Basque country.

Nothing much of a restaurant more of a bistro. The food was good though the place does not have a warm atmosphere. The prices are too expensive for what it is.The decoration is not to my taste. All in all not worth a second visit.

Located in the centre of town this old hotel has a great dining room. Family-owned, the service is friendly and helpful. I had the home cooked foie gras - served with a glass of Sauterne-like wine, followed by a perfectly cooked half lobster with the most inventive and delicious fresh herb sauce I had ever had. Good wine list.

Good beer, rose and red wines. The visiting stag party added to the convivial atmosphere.

The weekly Wednesday market (Marche) surrounds the Au Coin Pied de Cochon restaurant in Peyhorade. You must check in with the jovial, pleasantly teasing proprietor at the bar before getting a table as people make reservations in advance. We started with a glass of delicious House Sangria while perusing the limited menu - check the boards around the restaurant as I noticed later there are other food times and information on the boards. My husband had the15E formula menu or the Menu du Marche - started with Garbure (not the greatest veg soup unfortunately). The main was a plate of white beans covered with strips of delicious pork breast meat - very fatty and absolutely delicious. He needed several pieces from the large bread basket to get though this plate. His dessert was a tart with a light colored chocolate sauce/pudding which was tasty but the tart itself was hard. I ordered off the menu - steak and frites (16E) - both were excellent, probably the best fries I've ever had. I finished with the Cafe Gourmand (8E) which came with 4 generous tastings of excellent desserts, 2 scoops of delicious cream and a tasty espresso. The waitresses are pleasant but a bit disorganized - i.e.: not knowing what desserts come with the Marche Menu. This food is not heart healthy but overall is a tasty treat if limited to once in a blue moon. The atmosphere is busy, casual and friendly.

For lunch we drove to a town called Ortheveille to a lovely restaurant called Ferme d'Orthe. We cleverly arrived right at noon as by 12:20 they were turning tables away. The clientele was everything from working men to couples to families to groups of older women. My husband stuck with the 12E menu du jour - eggs & bacon, pork chop on peas, dessert (pot o' chocolate) and 1/4L wine - good food and good value. I decided to order a la carte and started with a delicious warm goat cheese salad (the warm cheese wrapped in a little mini-crepe) followed by marget de canard which was delicious as not too fatty or large. It came with delicious French fries and salad - very good (23E for both). I also had a glass of Sangria de Maison and was excellent. The atmosphere and the service were both good. I would definitely come here again and would recommend.
