Reviews on French food in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The Saharan city of Nouakchott was a small fishing village until 1957, when Mauritania attained independence. The new capital city of a young country, Nouakchott has changed quite a bit since the Sixties, with mosques, government buildings, and street markets rising up out of the desert sand. Spread out over land that constantly being encroached upon by massive dunes, and inhabited by a nomadic people that don't keep their tents pitched in one place for very long, the city is always in flux.
Things to do in Nouakchott
Tucked away behind the nightclub (open from midnight on Fridays/Saturdays), pleasant garden restaurant with nice range of pizzas ... and for those who are thirsty something more than water is on offer.
â«ï¸First time of itâs kind in Mauritania! â«ï¸The indulging TIMELESS experience. â«ï¸A Coffeehouse, quality Fast food and beyond.. â³
Very nice environment with a few unique menu options. The frappucinos are delicious. They also offer some nice breakfast varieties.
One of the better restaurants in Nouakchot. Their seafood salad was one of the best I tried (and I have been exploring this menu item in quite a few restaurants). The couscous with meat was not only flavourful and juicy, but plentiful to feed more than 2 people, although it was a single portion. The service was impeccable and ambiance is exquizite while simple. They should work on their lightning, but its more of a local tradition than anything, probably. Perfect for dinners, and groups, they have more than one room.
Let's start by saying this place has the BEST STEAK in town. It comes out on a 500 degree plate sizzling in butter. All the sides are phenomenal, definitely get the potato gratin, the sliced potatoes are cooked in a creamy sauce covered in cheese! The atmosphere is comfortable and I have had great waiters every time I've come. Would definitely recommend a reservation though!

Seems like at least once during your stay in Nouakchott one must eat here. While there are other places to eat people ask if you have been here. I had a pleasant meal that was served by friendly staff that were also helpful.

This place is a bit hard to find, but is worth the search. A beautiful home in a residential area, the ambiance is perfect. The service and food were outstanding, and the price was affordable. The filet with Roquefort sauce was perfect. Various sauces and side dishes are available. The mashed potatoes were excellent. Espresso was the best i have had in a long time.
