We stopped for early evening drinks. All was fine, with friendly service. A lovely range of loose leaf teas. We did contemplate eating there but the menu had nothing to tempt us - which is surprising for a meat-focused establishment. Nice location

We visited here while passing the area. The restaurant is directly at the main square of this lovely town. We love the warmth of the place. Staff is extremely friendly, quick and attentive in their service. Atmosphere is great, warm and welcoming. Food is really very good, though for us not at risk of breaking any culinary records. Menu offers quite some choice at various price points. We both had a two course menu at 28 euro per person. All in all a very friendly place, were you are well taken care of with great food, offering good value for money.

We both had a starter and a main dish including several wines per glass. My starter was really great; baked gooseliver. Well balanced dish with great texture and flavor without being overbearing. Main and my wife's starter were very good, but not extraordinary. Goatcheeese and lamb. The house wines definitely have room for improvement, though staff was extremely helpful in sorting out a better wine for the main course. The restaurant is beautifully styled and staff very helpful and attentive. This is definitely an addition to the Lochem scene.

We had planned to eat in Rijssen itself, however after a heavy week and then a bracing walk in the surrounding woods we decided, after a quick look at the menu to eat in the hotel. The restaurant is surprisingly large and quite well designed in a modern manner. The staff charming and quite professional considering their ages. To be frank the starter was disappointing, the chef's sampler consisted of lamb ham, coburger ham, smoked salmon and a deep fried prawn on a bed of frisse over which was a drizzle of sweetish, brown rather unpleasant sauce. No idea what it was. Hardly inspirational and oddly enough the most expensive of the starters. The mains were good, Hazepeper and wild boar. Lovely, but again nothing to get wildly excited about and the broccolli that came as a side was not really warm. We didn't have puddings as such, just coffees with liqueurs served with chocolate, brownies and a piece of apple cake...what's to get wrong? The only jarring aspects of the evening were firstly an overpriced house wine, basically Spanish plonk, and the fact that the waiter seemed to be wearing tap shoes (the waitresses all wore soft soles). It was amazingly irritating to hear him click back and forward over the vast expanse of hard wood floor. When we, somewhat diplomatically I thought, proposed to him that he could use some of his tip to get some rubber soles, he merrily informed us that "Yes, some of his customers found the noise irritating, but then again, some didn't". I'm still working that one out, has he actually had customers who have complimented his staccato salvos across the floor and found it enhanced the dining experience? I guess I'll never know.

We decided to try this restaurant affiliated to the 'jeunes restaurateurs" as we had in the past many good experiences with such businesses. The staff is very friendly from the beginning to the end, the surrounding are very pleasant, design of the hotel and restaurant is what you expect for a romantic or quiet week-end.Unfortunately, the good part of the experience stops at the moment you start to order your aperitif...We started with 2 glasses of Champagne (Pommery) and it was definitively at room temperature..apparently, the wine cabinet was faulty, therefore temperature for Champagne and white wine was too warm. (but the Champagne was still on our final bill..)The first course (stukkade,Pata Negra & Foie gras) was average, for the main course (Beef fillet and sweet bread) we were not asked how we wanted the meat to be cooked, and the dessert was as average as the first course.Last remark, we did order a bottle of red wine, it was brought to us quickly but stayed uncorked for 15mns behind us until I asked the waiter to let the wine breathe a little before being served..Let us hope that this team had a bad day during our visit,..for 85euros per person you should expect a bit more than good surroundings and very friendly staff.

Great food and perfect service. No nonsense and food treated with love and care in preparation. Wine list is fantastic and absolutely worthwhile. Try the Nebbiolo if you like Italian wines but not too heavy (more light like Burgundy). The maitre is a typical local very friendly and no nonsense character. Service is again friendly and non nonsense. You feel at home here in the woods with great food without the feeling of going out eating 'too posh'. Wonderfull ecperience

The Dutch are generally down to earth people, except when it comes to their geographical names. The 60m (200ft) hill on which De Swarte Ruijter (Black Horseman) is situated, is officially called a âmountainâ.The restaurant, which is housed in a thatched former villa, has deservedly earned a Michelin star. During good summer days, it is possible to eat outside. There are ten separate bedrooms that border on to the pine forest; each has a small patio. The in-house brochure identifies the rooms as âsuitesâ, which is an exaggeration. The rooms are adequate but none too large and a bit sombre. The cherry on the pudding at this place is, without doubt, the excellent restaurant. We dined here on two consecutive evenings. The food was very tasty, beautifully presented, and the service was impeccable. And they do not skimp on the portions and amuses. Go and treat yourself.De Swarte Ruijter offers special stay-and-eat arrangements which are excellent value for money. The slightly hilly area is good for walks and cycling. One can rent bikes, including electric ones, in the nearby village. There is safe and ample parking available. A ten-minute walk will take you to the impressive Canadian War Cemetery where some 1,500 mostly young Canadian soldiers are buried, who fell during the liberation of Holland from the Nazis in 1945.

This is the kind of place you'll get a no nonsense meal. It's good food, well prepared and in line with the local surroudings: they serve a lot of game dishes. We had a great evening, with helpfull staff, and we had our desert near the fireplace. If you're in the area, worth checking this place out.
