There's a reason this place is one of the top restaurants in Suzhou. It's almost worth a day trip from Shanghai just to get some of YaBa's fried dumplings. They are crispy on the bottom and filled with amazingly delicious hot pork and broth. There's no English signage or menu and the staff doesn't speak English, but don't let that deter you. Pull up a photo of the front entrance/sign (there are plenty on TripAdvisor) so you can recognize it. Ordering is easy - show them a photo or just point to one of the dozens of plates of dumplings all around you. The friendly staff helped us figure out where to take our receipt. Seriously do not miss this place, especially if you're already planning on stopping through Suzhou. After a 3 month trip all throughout China, we're still craving YaBa's fried dumplings.

There aren't many bars in Suzhou, so this place - attached to the Hotel Soul two doors along the street, one of the best mid-priced hotels in the city centre - could be a very valuable addition to the area's nightlife offerings.But its stark decor is severely uninviting, the prices are off-puttingly high, and the staff are terminally bored, inattentive (often, indeed, they disappear altogether for long periods).Despite having a large captive clientele available in the guests of its busy parent hotel, it is almost invariably deserted - which is a telling measure of how charmless it is.
