Coney Island Lunch

This is a local favorite, the hot dogs are really great. I grew up eating them and it is the first place I go when I return to Johnstown. This place is a must experience whein in Johnstown.

It breaks my heart to say they closed after over a hundred years in business. My grand parents went here after they got married, my parents went here after they were married and me and my wife enjoyed their delicious chili dogs. This place is to much a part of Johnstown history to remain closed, please someone buy this piece of Americana and keep it open for another hundred years.

Ems Original Sub Shop

Reviewed By Babu2773

We like to support local businesses when we travel, so we bypassed some standard chains and came here in search of a good sub. Within 30 seconds we should have walked out. An employee was finishing with a woman in front of us, but it wasn't clear if she was finished or not because she did not wish the woman a good day or have some sort of ending to their conversation. The woman stepped aside so I approached with hubby. The employee stared at me. I thought I had erred and was intruding on the other woman, but no, the other woman walked away and the employee continued to stare at me. Finally, I said, "Hi." Stare. No response. I just jumped in and ordered my sandwich and then she said two words I didn't understand. Something about the sandwich. She repeated the two words and I said I didn't understand. "They are peppers," she snapped. I was ready to walk at this point, but I was so hungry and not much into scene making, so I stayed. She turned to my husband who leveled a stare at her that would freeze water. At this point, another employee came around the corner with a sour face complaining to the manager who was next to our cashier. I was beginning to wonder if this was a condition of working here. Hubby ordered his sandwich and seemed to radiate the message that the cashier was unbelievably rude because she did thank us for our order. We then found seating and waited to hear our number. Hubby went up and retrieved the sandwiches and he reported the cashier was nicer. He also bought water from the manager and she was exceptionally friendly, but the damage had been done. A short time later I saw a man who had been waiting at the register for help get yelled at by the manager. I have no idea what it was for, but he had been waiting for a few minutes at the register and the manager was out in the room talking with customers. She finally approached him, and again, I don't know what he said, but it seemed like he needed help with a lottery machine. All I heard was the manager slap the machine, tell the man to figure it out himself and walk away shouting, "You can't talk to me like that." Like I said, I have no idea what was said, but having worked in the hospitality industry, I know you don't scream at customers, and if you feel you have to give a customer a talking to, it's not within earshot of customers. A low, "that's inappropriate" or "that's not appreciated' is better. At this point, we finished our merely adequate subs, which contained a lot of meat but little flavor and not very fresh bread and left. This may have been merely a bad day, but we will definitely not be back. The experience tarnished our visit of Johnstown.

This is a small mom & pop corner quasi grocery story, but they do really good prepared foods, along with catering. And their subs are really great - hard crusty roll substantially filled with your choice of cold cuts and condiments. Daily dinner specials for take out.

Two sandwiches, one a 6" and one a larger one, two tiny bags of chips and two drinks and cost was over $23. Too much money for just a sub. Good bread, but nothing to bring me back again.
