Each year for the holidays my French-Canadian aunts would each make a tourtiere. Every one was a creation of comfort food love. While I never saw any recipe, each aunt swore hers was the way my grandmother made it. I have no idea. I looked forward to this tradition. It was a connection to far simpler time, way back when Canada was not our enemy. I was in Waterville for a meeting. I came across this entry for Belanger's here on Tripadvisor. It was a grey, cold, snowy day. Warm tourtiere seemed like an ideal lunch.I'm so glad I took the time to find the place. Each of my aunts made a slightly different version of their mother's dish. Every pie was bland. Once I was out of their sight I doctored my slice with salt, pepper, and whatever sauce I could find. This was not necessary at Belanger's. Their recipe was wonderful totally as is. I didn't feel the need to tweak what was served. My aunt's passed long ago. They won't know that a little place in Fairfield cooks a piece of a French-Canadian tradition far better than any they produced. I don't know if Belanger's sells whole pies. I hope they do. Next time I am anywhere close I'll pick one up. It'll be the perfect dinner for a cold winter evening.

We stopped here while traveling through Maine and I was hoping it had the same great taste as the one in Leesburg, Virginia (see my review for this one in another post). I was amazed it had the same great taste, well-seasoned, juicy bite as the one I eat back home. We didn't take any fries here because we didn't want a food coma for a longs day drive, but we will definitely stop again when on the road.

Waterville has two Dairy Queen facilities. The original of the two on College Ave. is seasonal (9 mos.) and the newest of the two units is on Kenndedy Memorial Drive with an "Orange Julius" that is open all year long. These two DQ's have been in the same local family ownership for two generations going back some 55 years plus. Highly managed and both are very clean traditional establishments. Service is inside at both facilities.
