The Gallivant

We went with high expectations and were disappointed. Our welcome was friendly and the bar area well appointed and attractive. But the service was amateur - the carafe of white wine for the first course arrived after we had eaten it. Our waitress had to check the name of the red three times and then could not find it. The wine waiter solved the puzzle. It was good ,but expensive for what it was.Our first courses were ok -slightly tasteless asparagus with hollandaise, average mackerel and carpaccio. Our steaks were not rare the first time as promised , but the second were better if very expensive at £28 a piece and not very tasty. We were not impressed by the explanation that ribeye steaks should not be cooked rare as my son is a former restaurateur who has served dozens of rare ribeyes. My wife’s warm lobster salad was not warm and the lobster pieces very small. My daughter in law’s gnocchi were average. We did get a discount because of the steak ( without asking for it or expecting it) which we appreciated. But the whole evening was a great disappointment. Dear BellDavidI am sorry that your experience was so poor. It should not have been. Could you contact me so I can be clear when you dined with us so I can understand more about what happened. Always professional service with well cooked, seasoned and presented dishes. Good wine list - and a glass of Champagne as aperitif in the sunny garden was a treat.

The George Grill

The George Grill and our bar, The George Tap, are temples of all day dining, serving a modern European menu with a sunny, Mediterranean slant. At the heart of the kitchen is a Josper wood-charcoal grill, where our kitchen team, led by Robert Wright fast-c

Finding the location is very easy as it’s on the High Street. Parking is limited so if you see a space and are close, take it and walk the rest of the way. There are 3 entrances to the restaurant but access is only via the hotel entrance which is a bit confusing. Tables are quite close together so if you are expecting an intimate private dinner ask ahead if this can be accommodated. We ordered Salt and Pepper Squid and Pate. Both starters were very tasty although the Squid in my opinion needed more Salt and Pepper. Half filling the bowl with chopped spring onion serves no purpose because who will eat 3 spring onions raw? Mains comprised of Seafood Chowder and Pan Fried Sea Bass. The Bass was missing the samphire and the saffron lyonnaise. I drizzled a couple spoons of the seafood chowder over the bass and both tasted absolutely delicious.Deserts were Cheese Board and Passionfruit and White Chocolate Parfait with Passionfruit Sorbet and Crushed Pistachio. Both deserts were perfect and really good sized portions.Service was polite, friendly and efficient. A 10% gratuity is added to the bill for diner convenience. Not everyone has a calculator built in :) We had a lovely evening and would recommend to family and friendsDear MartinW431We're glad to hear you had a lovely evening, thank you for the recommendation. Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We've taken all your comments on board and we hope to be able to welcome you back soon! With best wishesThe George in Rye

Great cakes and snacks. Some of the items in the farm store were overpriced such as the English asparagus £5, but the other items we purchased for lunch fresh strawberries, anchovies, tomatoes, green olives, onions in balsamic vinegar, fresh crusty rolls etc made for a quick salad lunch back at Camber.

We have been frequenting this restaurant over the past 25 years....recent visits there have been pretty good. Sunday lunch was a family affair and the food was excellent, loaded with taste and generous portions. We were looked after by a good friendly team of serving staff. Recommend the roast beef with a nice Rioja.Later in the week we had an evening meal here, this time I tried the Herb crusted Gunard with Crayfish and my wife had the Buttered chicken......wow! The fish dish in particular was probably one of the best fish dishes I've had in a long time, I'd have had it again if we stayed another night....incredible flavours and so well put together, all washed down with a well recommended Sancerre. My wife adored her dish which I couldn't resist trying. We overheard that the Head Chef was in that evening....he and his team must be congratulated and thanked for providing a wonderful meal on our 25th wedding anniversary and the serving staff for their recommendations and professionalism. We are looking forward to a return visit in December.Thank you for your review. Congratulations on your 25th Wedding Anniversary. We will share your fulsome praise with the Head Chef and his team, and with the Restaurant Manager. Your praise for both the quality of food and service was replicated by the view of our recent unannounced visit by the AA Inspector. The outcome of the AA Inspector's visit was to award the Restaurant, 2 AA Rosettes for Fine Dining and Service for the sixth consecutive year.We look forward to welcoming you again in December.

We had afternoon tea, the cakes, scones, biscuits etc were lovely but sadly let down by the service - went with Groupon but not worth paying full price. Thank you for your review I really wish you could have come to see us before leaving as I would like to try and find out who served you as we have different people working on different days in the tearooms. I am sincerely sorry that the service was disappointing but unfortunately I can not find out who served you. If you would like to contact the hotel with more details or email us that would be much appreciated.
