Visited for lunch after a morning shopping attracted by the online lunch menu. Very pleased with choices offered, lovely light clean restaurant. A £12 for 3 courses and just £2 for a very decent glass of Shiraz with the lunch offer we were delighted. Our server Igor was friendly, informative and knowledgeable. I visited The Golden Cross last night with a group of family and friends to celebrate a birthday. Iâve been many times before and have always enjoyed the experience however on this occasion it excelled itself. The decor and surroundings are so welcoming - quirky yet tasteful with fur throws and cushions adding to the comfortable ambiance. However it was the food that stole the show!! What an inspired menu! Only problem was, it made choosing only one dish a difficult task. For starters we solved that dilemma by having shared boards of a number items including oriental dim sum dumplings with a delicate ginger dipping sauce, asparagus with soft poached egg, burrata and the most delicious olives Iâve ever tasted! We finally selected main courses and everyone claimed theirs to be perfect!! My smoked beef brisket on macaroni cheese with apple coleslaw was heaven and I sampled the belly pork which oozed flavour with a thin, delicate glazed crackling that was brittle and perfect!! We ended with some cheese. Although the desert menu was equally tempting, we just could not do it justice. Thank you Theresa, Gareth and all the staff at The Golden Cross for a perfect and highly memorable evening!!

Went here pre-theatre so it was pretty quiet so the service was good. Food was excellent...a selection of tapas to share. If thereâs a small criticism itâs the ambience. The stone floors and stark furnishings inside make it a very cool, even cold environment which doesnât quite evoke the Mediterranean atmosphere itâs meant to. Winter must be quite chilly in there.

Our first time of visiting this restaurant and as we visit Shrewsbury once a year we will definitely be back here. We had the speciality sharing platter for two which was excellent value for money. Everything was well presented, well cooked and very tasty. The waiting staff were very friendly and professional. They found us a table for two on a very busy Saturday night. You need to try here you won't be disappointed.

This place is really something special. The open kitchen bespeaks confidence, which continues in the warm welcome from the young and committed team. Great focus on local ingredients, fresh ideas beautifully presented and portion size spot on. Espresso martini was perfectly judged. A lovely birthday meal, we'll be back.

The starter of scallops was very good. Unfortunately the signature dish of fish was overlooked and the rice accomplishment was the most dry awful portion I have ever experienced. My wife is Asian so I know rice!!!!! When I mentioned this to the chef he said he disagreed about the rice. Obviously he doesn't know how to cook rice. The prawn on the dish was also obliterated even asking for all the dishes to be "less cooked".As as a specialist seafood I'm restaurant I'm not impressed and wouldn't recommend.I am really sorry that you havenât enjoyed your main course at La Mer Rouge and our signature dish of fried fillets of bream from the Egyptian cuisine served with fish rice, one of our best selling dishes isnât to your liking, 20 breams were sold that night to our customers whom all really enjoyed it and clearly felt I could cook rice, seems to me that your pallet is used to steamed plain white rice popular in Asian cuisines as our braised fish rice is very Aromatic infused with few herbs, spices, garlic, onions ..etc Hopefully we will see you again at La Mer Rouge maybe on your next anniversary, will cook for you again so rather than feel the need to write a poor review during your romantic evening together you may actually enjoy a different seafood experience to what you used to. Many thanksSherif Chef Patron
