Reviews on European food in Northern Cape, South Africa. The Northern Cape (Afrikaans: Noord-Kaap; Tswana: Kapa Bokone) is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Cape Province was split up. Its capital is Kimberley. It includes the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, an international park shared with Botswana. It also includes the Augrabies Falls and the diamond mining regions in Kimberley and Alexander Bay. The Namaqualand region in the west is famous for its Namaqualand daisies. The southern towns of De Aar and Colesberg, in the Great Karoo, are major transport nodes between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. In the northeast, Kuruman is known as a mission station and also for its artesian spring, the Eye of Kuruman. The Orange River flows through the province, forming the borders with the Free State in the southeast and with Namibia to the northwest. The river is also used to irrigate the many vineyards in the arid region near Upington.

We had our first meal in Upington at Cafe Zest and thoroughly enjoyed the space. It is approached through a relatively narrow and unlikely entrance, but you walk in to find a visually interesting indoor/outdoor space with multiple tiers and areas of seating. The space feels quite trendy for its surroundings. Service was prompt and efficient. While I enjoyed my food, my partner found his duck to be only adequate. Despite that, we felt the food here was better than any other restaurant we found in Upington, which unfortunately offered mostly mediocre food at restaurants during our stay. It was only surpassed by the food we enjoyed at private bed and breakfasts and hotels or lodges.

We had a light dinner here (burgers and snails) food was a bit bland and tasteless for the price. Chef could put some more effort into the food we feel.

Set inside the Kimberley Anne Hotel, the restaurant proved to be a dining find that was not expected in Kimberley. Food was near fine dining standards, service was faultless, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Very busy on the mid-week night we dined, reservations probably recommended.

Ordered the Rump and Chicken combo, small portion for the price you pay. Sent my steak back, with another waiter as our waiter disappeared, as it was very poor quality and lots of tendons in it. After waiting for about 15 minutes for my new steak my waiter came back eventually telling me they didn't prepare another steak for me they just voided my transaction. Not the first time having problems at the casino. The fact that you have the nicest looking restaurant in town don't give you the right to give poor service.
