We were wandering around this medieval town centre looking for somewhere to have an evening meal. We noticed this place was busy - always a good sign. All the outside tables were either taken or reserved but as it was over 35 degsC we were so glad to eat inside where it was a bit cooler. Attentive service, well presented home cooked food. Simply delicious... Very friendly, too.

Arrived in MontLucon, tired and hungry after a long drive. Wandered into town, about 8.00pm on a Thursday, and looked in a few restaurants.Chose this one partly because there were people in it, and also because my wife is coeliac (needs gluten free) and buckwheat crepes (gallettes) are usually GF. We were given our choice of tables and when I explained our GF requirement, we were given a reassuring "No Problem" and shown the list of standard gallettes on the menu.We shared a salad starter, and my wife had a Gallette, I had a "Composee" which I would describe as a Gourmet Gallette. Everything was delicious and very filling. The service was friendly and professional, A little thing, I demolished all the bread which accompanied the starter (as I was rather hungry), so just before the mains arrived, another basket of bread was placed on the table - I'm not sure if this was standard practice, it appeared that they had noticed how quickly I ate the bread and simply (professionally) supplied some more.Along with our meal, we had a half-litre pichet of wine, two coffees (very nice coffee) and the total bill was 42 euro. Pretty good for France. It does more than crepes/gallettes - we just didn't look at the other options. The restaurant filled up very quickly after we arrived so it is obviously a popular spot with the locals. We chose very well.Highly recommended.

This is proberly one of the best resturants in Montlucon. We went here a pax of 8 to a business dinner. I arrived early waiting for the rest of the party. As I do not speak french it was imposible to communicate with the staff. As a result I was waiting outside (lovely surroundings) for 20 minutes, not once was I offered to order a drink. Strange and not okOnce all 8 was seated the servings started. bread missing at one plate, we had to continously pour our own wine and ran out more than once wich is not ok, slow service and not living up to the standard of the placeFood it self was very good, all servings was well prepared, well presented and tasteful, the real star of the show is definantly the food. We had the suggested menu of a soup with Foi Gras, free range stuffed turkey and french selection of cheese. For 40 EUR/pax really good value and worth every penny for sureLocation in the center of the old town is very nice and charming, a gem of a locationWould be happy to go back and feel torn in giving such a mixed review but service needs to step up to really let the place shine. great potential in food and locationDear Bjoern,Thanks a lot for sharing your experience in Le Grenier à Sel.We do our best to satisfy our guests, all your remarks were shared to the staff. It would be a great pleasure to see you in Le grenier à Sel,Best regards,

We chose this based on trip advisor reviews but I think it is generally overrated. Although the food was very good the service was frantic and we felt either ignored or hassled to order which meant we couldn't order everything we wanted because he had rushed off. My husband speaks excellent French so it wasn't a lack of communication. Lots of minor little niggles which left an overall feeling of being underwhelmed. Oh and beware it doesn't take credit cards.

We visited La Cantine last week. We were booked a table by our local accommodation and our strict dietary requirements were outlined before our arrival. We were assured these could be met. When we arrived, we were left sitting at our table for 20 minutes before anyone came to serve us. When we asked what was prepared for our gluten-free vegetarian friends, we were told only one vegetarian meal could be provided instead of the 5 that we'd pre-ordered.The waiter was extremely rude so we had no choice but to leave.Very very disappointing given our requirements were outlined in advance.Cannot recommend this restaurant at all I'm afraid.

Parfait

Le St Trop was recommended by our hotel, and was a superb choice for dinner. The staff were helpful, the menu was promising, and the wine list good. We were not disappointed - excellent food, nice wine, and very friendly service and ambience. All other diners were French, and we can't say whether the staff speak English. The price was perhaps a bit high - but worth it for, overall, one of the best dining experiences we've had in France for several years. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, although it's not very suitable for families with young children.

This restaurant did not open until 19-30 so we sat at a table in the non-smoking area and waited when they opened they wanted us to move to a bad location as they said the table was reserved no-one else was there. They absolutely refused to allow us to stay where we wanted to so we left and had a great meal at the pizzeria opposite. After our meal we saw no-one at the table we were forced from just 2 couples at the tables we didn't wish to sit at in total at 21-00 hours the restaurant had just 8 people sitting on the terrace. So can't tell you how the food was as we didn't get to eat.

Fantastic place for the family to dine al fresco on the large sunny patio of this old mill. The interior is a bit gloomy so if yo can't eat outside, go elsewhere. The pizzas and salads are good, and the crepes are excellent.
