First visit to this restaurant having been recommended by friends who have also previously enjoyed a great steak at another renowned steak establishment just off Deansgate which we also love to visit. The building is steeped in history and there was a good atmosphere although the restaurant was not particularly busy.We had a porterhouse to share which was very nice although slightly overcooked at one end. We had a portion of chips and a portion of creamed spinach to share. The chips were really tasty but oh my there were only a dozen which at £4.75 is not really acceptable. At the ‘other establishment’ one portion was more than enough for two to share so if ordering at the Hawksmoor strongly suggest you order a portion each if you’re hungry !We ordered a 500ml carafe of Malbec which was really nice. What we didn’t like was that our server didn’t bring out the bottle to show us where the wine was coming from and then he just started to pour the wine not asking if we wanted to taste it. We stopped him and advised we wished to taste it to then be told we don’t need to because the wine is really good. Needless to say we tasted it and yes it was good but we were surprised at this unprofessional approach and not the best start to what was otherwise a very enjoyable meal.Hello,Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. Thanks also for your kind words - we're so lucky to call this beautiful building home, and I pleased that you enjoyed the atmosphere also. That said, I'm sorry to hear of the points you've highlighted about the food and wine. Whilst not a colossal deal, it's the little things that we strive to perfect daily, and it sounds like we missed the mark on this occasion. To best highlight this to the rest of the team here, it would be great if you could share your comments via email to [email protected]. I hope to hear from you again soon, and look to getting everything perfect next time.Dale

No. 1 Canal Street

Reviewed By hbulman2017

We visited this restaurant on 16th September having booked online after reading other reviews. We had a window seat overlooking the canal and into the tastefully decorated restaurant. The waiter was friendly and quite jokey - seemingly trying to push our boundaries with innuendo but not a problem. Probably goes with the territory. Food was reasonable and very nice. I had fish and chips and my husband had the steak. We had a couple of cocktails too. It was nice to see a dog friendly place as well. Would definitely come back if in Manchester again.Hi hbulman2017,Many thanks for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback about your experience dining with us recently. We are so pleased that you had such a great time and enjoyed our canal side seating and friendly service. It is also great to hear that you enjoyed both your fish and chips and your husband his steak - in addition to the cocktails of course! We look forward to seeing you again on your next visit to Manchester - perhaps this time you could bring your dogs along too?!Kind Regards, The Management Team

Have to agree with previous review by Charlotte; wouldn’t have known it was meat in our Ravioli, the pasta was a bit too al dente & it wasn’t hot enough. The place is not quite special enough and pretty small - so do need to book. I would say it’s a great student venue but the wines are ridiculously expensive... Friendly service and very welcoming.

Celebrating my sisters b-day, she wanted to go to Saray. Its a little intimate restaurant, cosy. I was a little cold at first but warmed up after an alcoholic drink. Sat near to another couple celebrating the husband b-day too. The food was delicious and so much of it that we couldn't finish it all. Staff were friendly and courteous throughout. At the end of the night, my sister and the gentleman celebrating their birthdays were presented with a cake and a chorus of 'Happy birthday', which was unexpected. It made the night for my sister, what a lovely gesture!

Authentic Spanish cuisine in Manchester city centre.

This Spanish restaurant is a cut above. It has a lovely, chic interior - the booths are especially good. The service was genuine and helpful. We ordered from the set menu, which was simply superb. For mains, my partner had the steak which she loved and I had the half chicken with a side of very tasty wild rice. The flavours were subtle yet very appealing. This is not the cheapest place but it sails about the generally average food Manchester has to offer. If you like Spanish food, cooked expertly and with great service then I would highly recommend!

A meal for seven friends here was a delight. The service was friendly but professional, and the ambience of the low-ceilinged intimate dining room made it feel more like you were eating in someone's home than in commercial establishment. Dishes were nicely presented and well executed and the emphasis on seasonal produce was clear, although several of us felt that there was a lack of seasoning -a bit more salt would have made the dishes 'sing'. There was also a distinct lack of carbohydrate: a tiny square of dauphinoise potato was the sum of it. This did mean we all had room for the delicious desserts, with the sticky toffee pudding matching the accolade at the Lime Tree last year as 'joint best ever'. This was a lovely meal, and I'd be more than happy to return -if only to work my was through the amazing dessert selection.

Wonderful little restaurant tucked away off Deansgate. Great ambiance created in a small room with cosy wooden furniture. Staff were so, so friendly and the service was excellent. Food was way above my expectations. Starters of polish sausage or herring were both beautifully presented and tasted as good as they looked. For mains we had the ox cheeks, the lamb shank, the dumplings. Everything was perfect. Really worthy of note. The desserts on the table at the side of the room all looked impressive. We had a strawberry crumble to share and this was one of the best desserts I have ever had. All this was washed down with a lovely Sauvignon Blanc from Bulgaria (I think). This really is the best Polish food in town and of you don’t think you like Polish food then get yourself down to Platzki and find out you do!

Went here on Octber 18th with my wife. She had been before, this was my first experience. Quite a small venue, tables quite close together. We sat upstairs which started very quiet but filled up throughout the evening. Didn't notice other people's conversations or the area feeling too tight of space. The options on the menu are terrific, neither of us ate meat but there was so much to choose from in the vegetarian and seafood sections. We tried 6 of the various offerings, the goats cheese bon bons and tuna tartare particularly delicious. A nice aspect was that there felt like there was more to try when we come again. The service was truly excellent, very attentive and chatty from Karolina. Great venue in a much needed part of town that could do with some more bars/restaurants.Will definitely come back to try more!
