Visited after a 2 hour journey from Luebeck.. Tried the maibock, dunkel and schwarz beers, all pleasant but won't cause sleepless nights amongst the headbrewers in Munich. Food was of a good standard but again I had a better schweinhaxe in paulaner's wirsthaus in Luebeck the following day. Good if you go out for a meal with friends... but hardened fans of all things Bayerische will be underwhelmed. Good choice of food and drinks though.

We are staying in Hitzacker for 3 nights and found this typical German restaurant, very nicely situated at the waterfront. We had dinner outside at the beautiful terrace. We had fish soup as a starter, which was very nice. I had the Finkenwerder plaice and my husband the pepper steak. The plaice was well cooked, the steak to our taste a bit overcooked. In general this is a typical German restaurant where they serve what the Germans call "gutbürgerliche Küche", but at this place it is done very nicely.

This is quite off the beaten track for overseas visitors - the locals like to keep it to themselves! The view from the terraces is wide open across the marshes bordering the Elbe and wildlife abounds. Cranes were nesting on high chimneys when we were there, and other birds were flocking for the fish. The restaurant specialises in local and seasonal dishes, notably eel caught from the river and prepared in a number of ways - jellied, roasted, braised in a green sauce (parsley and other herbs) and very savoury. There are other fish, including a roast mackerel in gooseberry sauce, and of course the usual meats. We were there on a busy spring Sunday and the staff were a bit pressurised, but friendly and helpful (one of our party was in a wheelchair). Their cakes for dessert were appealing, but we were too full! We loved it - and next time were in the area we'll be back!
Great service and food. The place was full when we arrived but they managed to find us a table. We had a great night - and enjoyed the free ouzo shots at the end!

You climb up lots of stairs after a walk at the Elbe river, it definitely worth every step to get up here. We had different cakes and coffee, which was tasty, better than how my wife makes it. Kids enjoyed their apple juice too. Prices are fair, service is fast and friendly. I have seen other families also with smaller kids, you get extra child seat of course. The furniture and decoration is pretty elegant. Recommend any time again

We recently stopped over at Hitzacker on our way to the North Eastern German islands and spent a very pleasant evening at Dierks restaurant. The weather was superb allowing us to enjoy our typical German style evening meal ouside on the terrace in this "harbour" area of the village. I can recommend the fried plaice served with tasty fried potatoes. Service was excellent - friendly & efficient without being imposing. Given the choice, I would have liked to have had the chance to sample a local draught beer but that's only a minor point. The next morning we also had breakfast at Dierks, the restaurant being part of the Hafen hotel in the village. It was available buffet style and perfectly adequete. Pity that we couldn't enjoy it on the terrace as we were blessed with more beautiful weather. All in all a very pleasant place for a no nonsense German culinary experience.
