Fowey (/ˈfɔɪ/ ( listen) FOY; Cornish: Fowydh, meaning 'Beech Trees') is a small town, civil parish and cargo port at the mouth of the River Fowey in south Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The town has been in existence since before 1300; the estuary of the River Fowey forms a natural harbour which enabled the town to become an important trading centre. Privateers also made use of the sheltered harbourage. The Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway brought China clay here for export.

Asquiths

Reviewed By IdleBean

OK, so Lostwithiel is not the “foodie capital of Cornwall” nor is it amongst the trendiest of destinations in this tourist mecca but Asquiths makes the place well worth visiting! On finding that our holiday cottage was “361 ft” from the restaurant we really had no excuse.A warm welcome followed by complimentary olives/mushrooms/tomatoes set the tone very nicely and swiftly followed by a glass of our chosen wine...my wife asked for a glass of Malbec which was provided without quibble even though it was not on the ‘by the glass’ list. The menu is nicely short (4/5 choices per section) but with plenty of variety. Food was beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. The stress that Asquiths places on sourcing quality local ingredients led us to expect something a bit special but we were delighted with just how special it turned out to be. This is high quality dining but with sensibly sized portions (by which I mean that you actually get properly fed unlike with “up itself” cuisine). I could rave on about my menu choices but, given my wife’s reactions, hers were just as exceptional so we’re confident that everything else will be just as good...in fact we’re going back before we leave just to make sure! The damage came to £90 (plus tip) and, although we’re from Yorkshire, we considered that amazing value for money! The only question we were left with is...where are you all? OK, Thursday evening on what turned out to have been the hottest day of the year, ever, (everywhere except this part of Cornwall BTW) but we were the only diners! Please patronise this place if you get the chance...it would be criminal if it were to disappear because it’s a bit off the fashionable trail.

My wife and I was staying at a local B&B within in walking distance on Wednesday/Thursday evening and decided on the 18th to visit Trewithen as having read Tripadvisor reviews. We started the evening of complimentary bread with Cornish butter/Olive Oil and Balsamic/Curried Butter( excellent) followed with starters of local Fowey Mussels £7.50 ( the best fat meaty mussels we've had for ages... terrific). For mains ( choice of 2 extra side dishes) Grilled Hake Fillet on Saffron Risotto, Brown Shrimp &Smoked Chilli Salsa £20.00 plus my choice of Vegetables and Cornish Dauphinois ( lovely fish and risotto plus my greedy Dauphinois... I ate toooo much). My wife had the Battered Fish with Pea and Mint Crush, Home made Caper Mayonnaise and Chunky Chips £15.00 ( she said everything was excellent but could not eat all the chips.. Shame they were lovely crispy and fluffy inside). To accompany our meal we had a 250 ml glass of Sauvignon Blanc £9.30 , 175ml Malbec £6.10. Their service was attentive and pleasant with no service charge.

Edie's Kitchen

A fabulous, reasonably priced, family-run restaurant in Carlyon Bay, Cornwall catering to every taste. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Just returned to our hotel having taken an early dinner at Edie’s. We popped in to book this morning & was met with a welcome, cheery smile and chat. Returned this evening to a beautiful atmosphere. We were sat at Table 12, it has a view of the chef, Nigel and his extremely caring and efficient team. The feeling of calm was palpable and appeared to work like a well oiled machine. The waitresses were young, knowledgeable and very friendly without being familiar. The menu is not extensive, but beautifully put together to suit even the most discerning tastes. In addition to that, there are daily specials. We had the pigeon to start and choose the pan fried hake and the neck of lamb as mains. The quality of presentation is superb but overshadowed by the wonderful tastes on our plates! I didn’t want the meal to end. Unusually, we had dessert, the blackberry soufflé with lemon sorbet and a treacle tart with clotted cream and salted caramel. The whole meal was exemplary. I can honestly say that it equalled a meal we had in the summer at a Michelin Star restaurant for a birthday celebration. We urge you to book and visit this wonderful little restaurant and enjoy possibly one of the best meals you’ll have in a while. Fine dining without taking a mortgage out!

Had to prompt for drinks orders to be taken. Food was lovely and they really do a great job of seafood. Drinks are overpriced £5 the cheapest pint and that is their own lager too! Overall, lovely place and lovely food. Just let down in a few areas which is slightly disappointing when your paying top money.

My wife and I stayed in the hotel over New Years, and ate at the restaurant for the special New Years celebration, so the menu will be different from the normal dinner menu. Having said that, if the regular menu is anything like what we experienced on NYE, the food will be exceptional. The menu was clearly very thoughtfully and carefully curated, with strong but beautifully balanced flavours. We were blown away. We’ve been fortunate enough to have eaten at some of Cornwall’s big name restaurants, and what we experienced at Cormorant was well up there. To top it off, the restaurant is situated in a lovely setting overlooking the river. A true hidden Gem. Would thoroughly recommend.

A quaint looking restaurant with hotel rooms above. Beautiful waterside terrace with fantastic views. We had a table overlooking the water - which at any other time would have been fantastic but was spoilt by the cigarette smell coming from those on the terrace. The menu was very limited - a choice of 4 items including one vegetarian selection. The cooking was good but basic, the portion sizes were very small, the addition of edible flowers was an attempt that did not add to the meal. The average price for a 2 course meal excluding wine after the service charge was £55 per head. The trouble was that the food was ok, it was fine but the price tag gave an expectation that just wasn’t realised.Dear DavidThank you for your review about your recent dining experience at The Old Quay House Hotel. We appreciate your valuable comments. A two-course meal in the relaxed Fine Dining restaurant where you had your meal, inclusive of an appetizer and an exquisite view over the estuary, is only £ 37.50 per head. The menu can be customised on request, and given prior notice, our Chef can prepare any dish to your liking. We do apologize that during your visit we did not meet your expectation and hope that you will visit us again soon.Kind regardsAndries Loots

Fowey is full of pubs, bakeries, lots of places down on the riverfront...but head away from there, up to the Esplanade..and although you won't get riverside views you will get (or at least we did) great tapas, excellent selection of wines, and friendly service from enthusiastic and friendly staff. Step away from the centre and enjoy some great tapas...thank you, loved it.
