We tried to get in for lunch one day but were turned away from a bustling restaurant because they stop serving at 13.30. So a few days later we arrived in good time but it was a religious holiday so the restaurant was almost empty. This made for a slightly charmless atmosphere but the food more than made up for it. Very good cooking and some inventive combinations, all very tasty and well presented. Service a bit unsmiling but very efficient.Nothing to do with the hotel, but worth noting that the Lac is currently drained for repair work and very unappealing!

Great massive salad, quarter of a bottle of wine, nice chicken roti main course with dessert all for 13 euros! Great service too!

We booked this restaurant, after reading the many good reviews, by telephone the day before. We drove from Paris arriving at 1.30pm for the "second sitting". The lady who seated us at the toilet door (when the restaurant was almost empty at that stage) was unsmiling and sullen. The sort of attitude that gives french people a bad name.As the menu of the day included boudin noir as a main course (which is not our cup of tea), we chose the a la carte menu, having two salads and two main courses and an excuse for a cheese plate. The salads were OK but certainly nothing special, the main courses very ordinary and the cheese plate was pathetic. You would get better one at a roadside Routier. The wine was OK but expensive for what it was. This meal turned out to be the worst and most expensive one we had in over 6 weeks travelling in France, Italy and Spain. That coupled with the bad feeling that was conveyed to us from the maitresse d'hotel left a very bad taste in our mouths. We just can't understand the good reviews that have been lavished upon this establishment.

Simple, classic French auberge dining room with large fireplace at one end.Food absolutely delicious, the starter with girolles and foire gras de canard was superb. The panna cotta with apricots and raspberries was delicious and the beef in between was beautifully cooked. We chose a St Emilion Grande Cru which was slightly sharp and I feel not quite as good as it should have been for the price (â¬69).All in all a very pleasant evening with friends (for whom this their local, lucky things!)

On our way to Abbaye Fontenay, we stopped at the village of Flavigny sur Ozerain. It is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France and it did not disappoint! Known for its anise flavored candy first produced by the monks, it is a very quaint village with beautiful vistas and an ancient crypt. We had a wonderful meal outdoors at the Restaurant de l'Abbaye. Very traditional and delicious luncheon offerings in a beautiful setting. A caveat: you need to be mindful of eating well before 2pm. All restaurants close for their luncheon hour at 2 and don't reopen until dinner. Arriving at 1:45 may not get you a table, lunch or even a glass of wine.
