One wonders how long a restaurant of this sort can last. It is a great location and every seat was taken when we arrived. Tables are packed together. There is no organized seating order, just survival of the fittest. It was understaffed on the day of our visit. Our waitress acted as if it were her first day and she was unfamiliar with both the menu and basic French foods and beverages. I ordered a chevre burger and my wife a Salade Paysanne and a sweet Cider. She repeated that she wanted sweet, not tatr. After a few minutes the waitress brought a tart cider. My wife immediately, but gently pointed out her mistake. The girl answered that tart was the only kind they had. My wife ordered a Perrier to replace it. The waitress turned to leave without the cider when my wife told her to take it away. The waitress answered that since it was ordered, we would have to pay. We made it clear that we would not - and did not. The conversation deteriorated from there. When the waitress returned with the Perrier, she slammed it down so hard on the table as to bounce the 'silverware.' To add to our misery, the salad was wilted and rather plain. The burger had so much fat that I seriously doubt it had chevre in at all.I can think of nothing positive to say for this restaurant!

I was expecting to stay in the "hotel de charme". Instead of it, we got a small apartment on the second floor with a small attic window, and very poorly furnished. Nothing to compare with the photos on the website. There was almost nothing in the kitchen, not even to open a bottle of wine (although we are in Burgundy). But the worst was still to come. We got a room next to a nun. There was a nun (une religieuse) living next to our room permanently. She was going to bed at 8 pm. However at 8 pm we were just coming back from our trips to the hotel. And this is where the problem started - she couldn't stand the noise. We were with two kids that were keen on watching television and the nun was always annoyed with the noise of the tv, of our steps - of us living here !!! You are wondering how you can have holidays without making the noise with two kids of 8 and 10! However, the hotel service was rather concerned that the nun could not sleep - so we were constantly given warnings. I even asked to move us to another room - the hotel is huge, however, we did not get anything. They even placed a paper in the elevator - "please do not make noise after 8 pm"; as you can imagine, we left this place after two nights without regret. Not to add that the breakfast is very modest - a monastere style - one cheese and that's all. So not worth 10 euro.

Having drove into Autun from the south, we reached late but wanted something light for dinner. One restaurant completely ignored our presence, the other said they gave stopped their food service ( it was 8.45 pm on a summer Friday night), we ended up here. The staff did warn us we need to wait for food, but we thought it won't be longer than 30 minutes. After 10 minutes of being seated, we managed to put in our orders. Another 10 minutes went by, we got our glasses of wine, and we asked for some water while waiting for our food. 15 minutes later, nothing, I had to go to the bar to get the water myself... At 10.30 pm, we were served our dishes. ( We arrived at 9 pm) My Greek salad was served with burnt bread instead of toasted ( as shown in my photo), my husband's faux filet was served without any sauce. Basically, I could have cooked better than this.

I had the escargot salad, and the dressing and salad vegies went all the way through - not just on top of a heap of lettuce. My husband's nicoise was likewise excellent. It was raining so staff were very busy, but the gent looking after us was excellent - he always kept an eye on tables and didn't stop.

Reviewers who call this 'the best dining in Autun' can't be far wrong. We ate breakfasts and major meals here over several days...and not for lack of having other choices. Travelers and plenty of local people choose to dine here. The dining room(s) are spacious and cheerful, light-filled venues. Table linens are of good quality and the food is very, very good. Fresh and local with solid contemporary more than 'imaginative' recipes dominate the menus. Prices are moderate and the wine list does credit to the region.

We were recomended this restaurant by our local host Phillipe. He couldn't have been more spot on with his views. The starters, mains and puddings were all superb. I can't write about individual meals as the four of us all (all men) had pretty different meals. We were however four very satisfied customers when we left. Point to note is there is no English menu but with a bit of our pigeon french, spanish, English, sign language and a decent iphone translator we cracked it. Wonderful restaurant. Wonderful meals.

The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside. The inside is small with interesting decorations and an open kitchen. The menu is mostly seafood. Everything we ordered was good.As a bonus, the couple at the next table were good after dinner companions.
