Things to do in Achern

For a restaurant that promotes itself around the village as the Gingerbread house, you'd think they'd have slightly more friendly staff. We visited twice and on both occasions the staff seemed bothered, to say the least, to serve us. Especially because we spoke English. Today we ordered flamkuchen which took an eternity to come out, however was delicious when it arrived. The restaurant itself is gorgeous with a beautiful canopy of grape vines, it just oozes charm. Can't say the same about the staff, poor effort guys - I'm fairly sure a smile is multilingual...

just happened to pass this restaurant / bar with rooms when out for a walk - great location for a glass of local wine overlooking the views

I have dined at Rebstock Waldulm twice, once last year and once this week, and each time the meal was wonderful. The chef takes advantage of local ingredients, and cooks with refinement and sophistication. The large number of foams (tomato, hay, and others) may be a little fashionable, but the flavors always work; the hay foam with tomato soup was a particular surprise at our table - but a hit. The perch was as good as perch gets, so good that it did not really need the truly excellent mustard sauce served with it. (Most of the sauce ended up being enjoyed with bread.) The fish dumplings were great. The steak elicited a great deal of approval, and was served wtih an excellent gratin. Our group had six desserts, and each one was fantastic. Locals at the table said that the desserts were far better and were more unique than at most restaurants in the area; it seems that even many of the better places do not hire their own dessert chefs so that there is some homogeneity. The wine list is extensive, but it is worth trying the restaurant´s own wines, which were very nice. Sirtting outside on the large verandah was lovely. The service was professional, friendly, and nearly flawless. The prices are not inexpensive, but the meal was worth more than we paid for it.The Black Forest is beautiful. Even if you are not in the area, however, this restaurant may well justify a special trip.

The restaurant serves excellent and Michelin-star awarded gourmet food on the edge of the black forest. We had ordered a pre-fixed 5-course menu, but the chef was very flexible to change several courses due to certain dietary requirements.Every single course was a delight, a festival of flavors. This applies to the actual menu, as well as to the spontaneous substitutes.Service was in the beginning a little distant, but developed during the course of the meal to be friendly and very attentive. The ambience of the restaurant is rustic - typically black forest. Good I guess, if you like it.We will be back in the summer to enjoy the vast garden restaurant.

Profis halt. Steaks werden an der offenen Wandflamme gegrillt. Alle Speisen gibt es auch zum Mitnehmen. So auch Flammkuchen und Pizzas. Hier findet wirklich jeder was tolles zum Essen. Also los schaut vorbei!

The building complex known locally in Achern as 'The Illenau' has an interesting history. Early in the 20th century it was a large psychiatric rehabilitation hospital. Then leater it became a camp for the French Army after WW2. Over the past 5 years, the local council has done a great restoration job on the whole area so that its an interesting stroll. The Arkaden Cafe is situated in the corner of the main courtyard and is a recently opened tasteful restoration, retaining lovely old red sandstone supporting pillars which hold up a vaulted ceiling in the eating area. It has a pleasant if slightly sterile atmosphere (perhaps not helped because it was empty of customers when we arrived on a Saturday morning). There's a nice shortish menu of food (Saturdays they have a 'Cordon Bleu' day) and some lovely cakes. We very much enjoyed delicious strawberry tart. They claim the food is all house-made.This place is worth a visit for a coffee or afternoon tea, although perhaps not a detour. The ambience will improve as it picks up customers and deserved reputation. Has WiFi too. Outside tables.

Some of the one-reviewer cafes listed for this small town raise suspicions of self-promotion, but this place is a definite recommendation for good-priced, fast food which you can either take away or enjoy inside ot outside at pleasant tables. Service is friendly and very efficient. Run by a hard-working family from eastern Turkey. You can see its justifiably popular from the steady flow of regulars. We ate Doner in a Yufka (a kind of wrap). The serving was frightenly large and a snip at 5 Euro, considering this was with table service. Also serve beers and local German wines.

This is definitely a restaurant worth making a detour for from your journey up or down the major A5 autobahn. Oberachern is a suburb of the amin local town of Achern. The restaurant unassuming from the front, but park in the back (in the church carpark, no-one will mind of an evening!) and walk through the delightful farmhouse herb garden and enter at the back. The welcome is warm from a very dedicated staff. We ate wonderful asparagus, WienerSchnitzel and a stupendous 'melt-in-the-mouth' leg of rabbit, finishing with orange and thyme sorbet beautifully decorated with seasonal fruits. With copious wine we paid E85 which seemed a snip for a meal which was well above average. WE also noticed a Michelin 2012 sticker on the window, so others clearly agree this place is worth eating at.

Dropped in briefly to taste Black Forest gateau in a typical Black Forest village . Pleasant surroundings and delicious cake , and the coffee was good too . One of several establishments offering the traditional confection . Chosen initially as it was nearest to the car park but we weren't disappointed .

Its a typical german pub (of which there are precious few remaining worth recommending in this area) which serves excellent beer from the barrel, terrific freshly cooked food by the proprietor and has great hosts. It really should be listed as there's not
All too often, bar/restaurants in this prosperous area of Germany are rather boring, un-atmospheric, modernish clones. This place stands out like a beacon. Its got a nice traditional decor, always seems busy, offers a good welcome and the food is really good. Its cooked personally by the owner who also finds the time to circulate amongst the customers whilst his wife runs the drinks side of things from the central oval bar where customers also sight up elbow to elbow chatting, drinking and eating. There are frequent 'specials' including wonderful mussels and excellent crispy duck, again foods not often found in your average Badische Kneipe (local pub). This place is easy to miss on Achern's Hauptstrasse, but there's ofetn a knot of smokers standing outside at night, and by day in Summer there are tables outside. Definitely worth a visit in this area. Having been at least a dozen times we can vouch for it!
