Veranda Cafe & Gift Provides Best Lunch in Black Mountain to the Asheville Area.
The Veranda is special lunch spot whenever we visit Black Mountain. A lunch only eatery they do an excellent job with eclectic menu of sandwiches (hot, cold and wraps) and salads. My husband has been savoring their Muffuletta - he was thrilled with this tantalizing treat. My favorite is the Turkey, Berry, Brie- grilled that is scrumptious. This is a favorite eatery for visitors and locals so it can be crowded and with a waiting. Arriving just before noon we missed the lunch crowd. We were surprised to learn the restaurant was under new owners. They were sticking with the well known menu so we could get out traditional favorites. The only downside we found was our waitress. While she was efficient there was no warmth or charm, that we saw from past staff.

The nice thing about eating at a national chain restaurant is that there should be no surprises. The menu, price and quality of the food should be the same everywhere. The only differences should be the building itself and the service. This Subway is in a filling station, near several motels and at an Interstate exit so it does a steady business. The surroundings aren't fancy but are kept clean and the service is good. The restrooms could use an update. There is almost always a special of the day or week and it is always a really good buy.

We enjoy German food so this looked like a good bet. The people were very pleasant and helpful. Good beer selection, but only 2 on draft (likely because draft beer goes stale unless it sells quickly). The star of our order (4 people) was the Schnitzel. Lightly breaded tenderized pork, perfectly cooked and delicious. Sausages were okay, but the potato salad was not the hot, bacon variety. It was cold and very, very dry. The red cabbage was unusual - different that usual. The restaurant was not very busy on a day when the town was overrun with people.
