This was my third visit to Casa do Provedor. Previously I've had two great meals there with exquisite steak and generous portions. This time we were served by a trainee waiter from the local vocational college. He was a lovely young lad but very nervous and struggled with opening a bottle of wine. We ordered the grilled steak and chips for a quick lunch. We weren't offered break or any snacks, as is usual in Portugal. Service was very slow. Unlike our previous visits, the steak was small, warm and very thin. Last time I visited I could hardly finish the steak. This time I was still hungry after eating it. The French fries were served in a pink metal bucket. When will restaurants stop this infantile practice of serving fries in silly containers? The fries were greasy, warm and unseasoned. For the first time ever in Portugal I had to ask for some salt. I ended up drinking a glass of Vinho Verde which wasn't very good. I had tried to order a glass of red but the only wine they could offer by the glass was an ageing bottle of Douro. The cork broke in two as the waiter tried to open the bottle. That's an indication that the wine had been stored upright. The wine itself was acidic and tasted corked, so we refused it. With the bill coming to â¬24 for two main courses, two glasses of house wine and some water, the bill was too high for Portugal. Sadly I won't be returning. This isn't the restaurant it once was. I'm not sure if it's under new ownership but it seems little more than a tourist trap now.
