Intimate restaurant in the heart of downtown St. John's, Newfoundland. Operating for over 17 years,Oliver's is a favourite for great seafood, steaks, fresh pastas and mouthwatering housemade desserts. Featuring intimate booths, warm colours and a fantasti
We arrived at Oliver's by default (see Mallard Cottage misery) when our reservations at another restaurant disappeared in a puff of self righteousness. We called Oliver's as refugees and were welcomed as honored guests. It is not a large restaurant, but it has character and most importantly, people who really care that your dining experience is good. When I asked our waiter if he was Oliver, he responded "almost" and then allowed he was the owner. He had worked there for many years as a waiter/manager and as the chef. He had purchased the restaurant and was now the waiter/manager/ chef and owner - and it showed. This man was invested in his business. We were served our meals quickly - I had a bisque that was beyond good, and a filet in blue cheese and bacon cream sauce - just wow! My companions had the lamb flank (outstanding), sea scallops (huge and crispy on the outside - perfect) and the blackened Atlantic salmon - which she loved. As we ate and talked, the restaurant got more and more busy - there was a bit of dining noise but we felt it added to the relaxed atmosphere. Then came desert and the first stumble. I ordered the bread pudding which was excellent, but my companions all ordered the brownie with raspberry sauce - and they won't stop talking about it - raving, in fact. They just oooed and awwwed with each bite. My bread pudding was as good as it gets, but I felt a bit on the outside looking in. Ah well, it was just about perfect.I will say that as the restaurant got busy, the staff began to be a bit overwhelmed, but it was not something that in any way detracted from the evening and we could see they were working very hard - and the food was just that good - we were completely relaxed. If we lived in St. john's, I could see Oliver's would easily become our go-to restaurant for excellent, well prepared and generous foods. The owner and staff really care about their business and the whole experience was superb. I would recommend "Oliver's" without reservation. (There is a joke there - see Mallard Cottage misery)

Located in the historic Murray Premises building in the heart of downtown St. John's The Gypsy Tea Room can accommodate large groups or the most intimate of diners. Our menu includes local favourites, European cuisine and unique daily features. We are ope
Our group of 8 had dinner here on our last evening of vacation in St. John's. We selected it after walking by and taking a look in the day before, and luckily they could accommodate us. The evening was fabulous from start to finish. We were seated in the downstairs room - the restaurant is much larger than we realized. We were looked after by Maja, and she did an excellent job! Her knowledge of food and drink options was impressive. We started with the tempura shrimp appetizer, which was fabulous. Our mains were the halibut from the menu and the featured halibut, both of which were excellent! Dessert was the strawberry cheesecake, which was delicious as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at The Gypsy Tea Room, and highly recommend it!Thank you for your five star review and recommendations! Maja is one of our senior servers who has been part of our service team for several years now! She is fantastic at what she does and I'm happy to hear she provided you with an excellent dining experience. As for the chefs, they are always creative and crafty when creating our nightly features. Their hard work and talents certainly show with just a bite or two of the dishes they prepare. I'm happy to hear you thoroughly enjoyed your visit with us. Happy travels!

Not so good sorry...average at best Right on Water Street, connected to a hotel...it looked good from the outside but was average at best. We had the crab cakes, the brie and bacon sandwich and the avocado burger...everything was dry, i wouldn't go back. Check out St. John's Fish Exchange...just down the street.
