Things to do in Valley Center
This is very sad. The Star House used to be among the most highly recommended Chinese food eateries in San Diego County; judging by my experience today, that's no longer the case. I ordered a curried chicken dish with an egg roll and fried rice; I'm finding it difficult to find the words to describe it. Each component of the meal was tainted with some kind of off-flavor, I can't place it. Perhaps it was spoiled meat; or maybe they got a bad batch of oil. I suppose it could have been that the meat was of some species other than chicken. The only things I only know with any certainty is that I've never experienced a flavor so awful, and that it made me vomit after tasting the egg roll, some rice, and some curried chicken. I hoped it was just a terrible one-time experience, but the staff convinced me: this restaurant has become a poor choice for dining. After I informed them of the problem, they offered to make another plate- as though even if I still had an appetite, I'd be willing to risk vomiting a second time. They insisted on payment in full, even though the meal was uneaten. There are plenty of hole-in-the-wall eateries of no great renown, some good and some bad; if this was one of those, I wouldn't bother writing this review. But this is a place that's received great acclaim. They have the articles and awards plastered all over their waiting area. Unfortunately, the restaurant that's covered in those articles is now a thing of the past.

We had just arrived in Escondido after a long day of travel from Florida. We wanted to get something simple and casual before retiring. We spotted Gourmet Wok an decided to give it a try for dinner. This is a small family restaurant in a strip center. I had the Mongolian beef which was spicy hot and good as it should be. Lynn had the Cashew Chicken. The entrees came with soup, rice and an egg roll. Total price for our nice meal with beverage (Lynn had a large Tsingtao beer) was $27.00 before tip.

We are from Pennsylvania and had never heard of Panda Express. We stopped for a quick meal and were glad that we did. The food was fresh, tasted good and I am fairly certain that there was no MSG. The price was reasonable. We got the family meal that was 4 large entrees and 2 large sides for around $35. It fed all 4 of us.
We enjoy Chinese food and normally do take-out; so we are always looking for the best deal and the best food. Dragon Express has exceeded our expectations. Good selection, freshly cooked, very reasonable prices for their entrees and combos and great portion sizes. We normally get two meals out of a 3-item combo! This is our new "go-to" Chinese takeout...although if you want to eat in, they have very nice tables and seating. Staff is excellent!

We were on vacation at Lawrence Welk and wanted to try a new Chinese place. Bamboo House fit the bill! We had one of the family dinners. It started with a complimentary bowl of crispy noodles served with a mustard and sweet sauce. The noodles were very crunchy and good. Then came the sizzling rice soup. It had a smoky flavor to it which was very different but very good. My husband wanted the hot and sour soup and he said it was good too. For appetizers, they brought fried shrimp, paper beef, BBQ spare rib and a stuffed fried wonton. The beef was tasty, the shrimp pretty normal, and the wonton had some curry in it - again different and very good. For the main meal we selected the si-chuan shrimp and the kung pao chicken. What I liked was that you can specify the spiciness so we had medium spice on the shrimp and spicy for the chicken. Both were very good! Fried rice came with it which was standard fare. We had wine with dinner - they had beer and wine but I didn't see a full bar. Over all, it was very good and the service was great! Always available to fill water, remove dirty dishes and they were attentive as to when to bring the next course. I would like to go back again if we're in the area!

Wonderful, brightly colored interior and fabulous service by people who care. And the menu is enormous...even a separate Chinese food menu.We started by splitting an order of Fresh Rolls with shrimp...fresh, ample but tasteless, even dry. The peanut sauce was very good.My wife order Bun with pork. It was very good but the dressing was too sweet, not balanced.I had to order Banh Mi with pork. The home baked bread was crusty, chewy and very fresh and very good, great. The filling, however, was dry and bland. Pickled onions would have helped. We will be back.

To start off, the food here is pretty good, but the service is appalling. There were four of us who got there around 7 pm on a Saturday night and the place was visibly busy. The hostess was kind of running around and she took a long time to get to us and finally when she did, she just told us âone minuteâ without giving us a time estimate when we would be seated. The wait wasnât too bad and we got seated inside. The place is a little cramped, but it looked clean and had a good atmosphere. Our waiter came over pretty quickly and was ready to take our drink order. He seemed to speak very little English and asked if we wanted waters. We said yes, and before we could even order more drinks, he had run off. When he came back, two of us ordered the hot tea and asked if the entrees came with rice (itâs not clear on the menu) and he said that they donât but a side of rice is only $1.00 which wasnât that bad at all. The tea came and we discovered that it was loose leaf, meaning that when you pour it into your cup the tea leaves get in there and the more you drink, the more bitter it becomes. Itâs definitely not worth it even though it was only like two dollars. We decided on a few appetizers and our entrees. I asked what was in the Shanghai Dumplings and thatâs when the waiter informed us that any Dim Sum stops being served after 5pm, which is quite a few items and also not listed on the menu. My friend tried to order lobster spring rolls and he informed us that they were out of those as well. On the menu, there are really no descriptions of what the items are to be honest. My friend ordered the Pad Thai (which is actually quite spicy) and my other two friends ordered Orange Chicken and I ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken. They brought out our entrees, but I guess our waiter misheard me and thought I had said Kung Pao Chicken. He apologized for it though, and they brought out my correct order. The food was really good and you get a lot of it, even though it is on the pricier side. Maybe if you come in when itâs less busy and before 5 pm youâll get a better experience, but we definitely didnât have a great one.
