Sitting on the Seward Peninsula, along the Bering Sea, the city of Nome was born after the "Three Lucky Swedes" found gold in 1898. The gold boom brought thousands of settlers to Nome, which soon grew from frontier town to small city. In 1925, a blizzard prevented medical supplies from reaching Nome, which was suffering from a diphtheria epidemic. A relay of sled dog teams struggled through the snow to reach the city, an epic journey that was the inspiration for the annual Iditarod Dog Race.

The Empress has a large menu, serving Thai, Korean, Chinese, and general American food. It is located right on the ocean boulevard and has a beautiful view of the water and sunset. The Empress is centrally located to Kotzebue's main drag and can easily be walked to from almost everywhere. The staff was very friendly and smiled, and they made a mean Ginger tea with honey. We ordered the Korean short ribs, which arrived sizzling on a cast iron plate, and the Empress specialty fried rice which had beef, chicken, egg, and shrimp in it. They were both delicious, especially the short ribs. The cost is typical village prices - much more expensive than lower 48 prices, but good for Kotzebue itself, where you can pay $30 for a pizza. The Korean ribs were $18 and the special fried rice was $16. The ginger tea was expensive, $6.50, but was delicious. The staff was attentive and the bathrooms were clean. I will go back.

Food was ok, server was really nice and helpful. Once we ordered the food was out pretty quickly. A bit expensive even relative to the other places we ate in Nome. That said, couldn't beat the time for them to get food out quick to us!
